*UPDATE* The suspect, Josiah Joshua Izquierdo, 26, of Worcester was arrested and allegedly charged with (2) counts of Shoplifting by Asportation, 3rd Offense. He will be arraigned on Monday.

Shortly after 10AM this morning, Worcester Police were dispatched to the Big Y grocery store at 100 Mayfield St for a reported shoplifting incident involving a male suspect who fled on foot with a shopping cart full of merchandise.

Officers canvassed the surrounding area and soon located a male matching the suspect description. Following a brief pursuit, the suspect abandoned the cart near Mason St before being apprehended in the parking lot of 211 Chandler St and taken into custody.

The shopping cart was found to contain hundreds of dollars worth of Tide Pods. Officers loaded the recovered merchandise into a cruiser for documentation and for safe return to the store, though the cart itself proved too large to fit inside the Durango cruiser.

I quickly stepped in to assist officers by transporting the cart back to the store in the bed of my truck.
