This was the first year in over TEN years I haven't offered Valentine's Day mini shoots. It didn't help that I was sick the entire month of January (as well as half the family). And then it just got away from me (despite the fact that January lasted about 10 weeks this year). But it didn't stop me from an impromptu Sunday afternoon photoshoot with my own kiddos... minus one :( They're good sports. Happy Valentine's Day!! ❤️❤️❤️

Giving direction is very important as a photographer since most people don’t know how to pose themselves or how they look from my view. It’s my job to make sure I get the best shot possible. Sometimes that means leaning in to guide exactly how your hands should rest, gently tilting your head, or moving a stray strand of hair out of your eyes. Attention to the smallest details ensures every image reflects the best version of you.

So when I find myself in someone’s personal space (something I value tremendously), I always think — nowhere else would this be acceptable.

The Lorax is one of our all-time favorite family movies. We’ve been talking about doing it for years and finally made it happen. The kids are always such good sports about humoring me by theming because they know how much joy it brings me and it’s been a fun tradition for us for 15 years.

We all kind of knew this would probably be our last theming Halloween (because let’s be honest, once the photos were taken, the costumes were never touched again.) But getting everyone together has gotten harder over the years, and next year we’ll have one on a mission and one off living her best life at college. (I guess I’ll still have the two littles I can bribe… haha!)

It’s a bittersweet feeling watching your kids grow up and move on. This just feels like the end to a beautiful, wonderful era. Here’s to all the years of laughter, matching costumes, and memories I’ll never forget.

Living near some of the swampier parts of Utah means one thing during summer sessions—mosquitoes. And nothing ruins a shoot faster than pesky bugs trying to attack us or leaving big red welts on your forehead. I learned that lesson the hard way more than once.

Now, bug spray is one thing I never take out of my camera bag. Because when you’re not swatting at mosquitoes, it makes everything much more enjoyable.

What’s something random you always keep in your bag that isn’t photography gear?

After years of trial and error, countless “ugh, I should’ve moved her here or fixed his hand there” moments, and endless hours scrolling for inspiration — I get it now.

Because after all the technical learning, the studying, the practice… it really does come down to that…

I just do what looks good.

I’ve learned that posing isn’t about following a formula — it’s about intuition. What looks and feels natural usually is what looks best. It just takes time and experience to trust that instinct.

I used to do this at every shoot thinking it was better. But now I’ve realized it was just a waste of everyone’s time.

OVERSHOOT.

Eventually, smiles get stale if everyone has to hold the same pose for five minutes while I shoot the same thing over and over. I like to be quick and efficient because no one wants to feel like their precious time is being wasted.

Overshooting also tires clients, slows down the session, and makes editing much more time-consuming.

Culling is so much easier when I don’t go overboard — I only need one good, clear shot of each pose. I still take enough to make sure eyes are open and the photo is sharp, but rarely do I shoot excessively. It keeps the session fun, natural, and focused on capturing the moments that matter.

If I had to start all over again as a photographer, these are the 3 things I would never skip…

1. Learning my camera:
I’d learn my camera inside and out, but more importantly, I’d practice, practice, practice everything I learned. It’s one thing to understand settings on paper, and a completely different thing to go out and use them in real life. The more you shoot, the more those skills become second nature.

2. Worry less about “nice” gear and focus more on education:
The newest camera doesn’t make you a better photographer — practice and knowledge do. I’d take courses, follow other photographers on social media, watch YouTube tutorials, study posing and lighting, and just keep learning. Skill will take you further than gear ever will.

3. Understand the importance of client relations:
That means clear communication, setting expectations, being kind and professional, and making people feel comfortable in front of the camera. Your photos matter, but the way you interact with people matters just as much.

If you’re just getting started, don’t worry about being perfect. Just keep showing up, keep learning, and know that every great photographer was once a beginner too.
