Sometimes the best shoot is the one with no brief, no client, and no deadline.

I spent a few hours in downtown LA just walking and shooting — City Hall, the glass towers along 1st Street, the reflections of old buildings in new curtain walls. The city is always doing something interesting with light if you slow down enough to look.

These are personal shots — the kind I take to stay sharp and stay in love with architectural photography. No builder tag. No MLS listing. Just Los Angeles being architecturally spectacular.

There are shoot days when the location does all the work — and your only job is to be still enough to notice.

This was one of those days. A hillside property in Malibu. Stone architecture that grew out of the land rather than sitting on top of it. A pergola terrace with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. Doors that opened to nothing but sky and hills.

I've been photographing homes and construction projects for over 15 years. Most of the time, my eye is trained on the details — the tile, the cabinetry, the light fixture, the angle. But every so often, a location reminds me why I started.

Nature is the original architect. I just try to photograph it honestly.
