Emmanuel Munet Photography Puerto Rican amateur photographer living in Virginia. Nature. Landscapes. Cities. Portraits.

SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING FRESH: While committing to my silent promise of learning more studio photography, I looked into the use of gels since I knew I wanted to have vibrant colors in my photos, and I'm sure you all like colors as well.

To gain some inspiration, I looked into the work of (the man is so amazing, check him out) and his tutorials from . I started by setting up one strobe with a beauty dish in front of the model, and then two more strobes with reflectors behind her with the gels. I suddenly went from no strobes to literally using three strobes in a studio setting. That's quite a jump, but I felt I could pull it off. Your first shot isn't always great, right?

At first, I was going for the gelled flares look, but then I ended with a gelled edge as seen in the photo, and felt happy with was accomplished. Can't complain for a first time gel user!

GOLDEN HOUR? WHEN?

I used to think Golden Hour was the perfect time to shoot. The shadows are not too harsh on your skin, it's a little cooler, and the sunlight is embracing a nice tone. What could go wrong? Well, what if you miss Golden Hour or you are simply too early to wait for it?

As of late, I've been reading a lot on studio lighting, modifiers and Einstein's theory of relativity (that last one is a joke), and how can photographers make the best of it. In all my research I can narrow down two styles:

1️⃣ - Photographers that use fixed settings on their camera, but have variable power outputs on their flash/light source; they just change the light's power
2️⃣ - Photographers that constantly change their camera settings and light at the same time; they change everything as they adapt to their situation

Since I didn't want to complicate things too much on myself, I opted for option #1 and analyzed the results. I only changed my camera settings when I switched lens since I only have one that can go as low as f/1.4. The more I practice, the more comfortable I become with the math part of photography. Curious thing, isn't it?

YOUTUBE IS MY BEST FRIEND: I think lately I've spent more time on YouTube that I would even care to admit. One thing I'm glad to know is the great number of people out there that are not privy of their accomplishments and share their lessons learned with other creatives so that we avoid those mistakes when it's our turn.

I looked into Frequency Separation videos and OH, MY GOD. Too many to go through. Same experience with general skin retouching, and let's not even talk about Dodge & Burn. There's many ways to approach one single problem, so it's best to play around until you find something that sticks to your style. Took me a while, but learning new things takes both practice and patience.

KEEP EXPERIMENTING: This is another capture that I'm proud and just shows the things our mind can create when we bring out the artistic side.

This lovely shot came together by shooting in continuous mode while I had someone splash water from a bottle. I then did a little Photoshop magic with the 12 or photos that I captured and got this result. I was I had recorded the behind-the-scenes.

Granted, only the first few shots were lit 💡 like this since the light was not set as continuous. The rest of the shots came back a little underexposed, but the water drops were still lit enough for me to make a small composite.

First time in a while since I last shot. I guess I haven't fully forgotten how to turn on camera, right?

This past weekend I met with a small group of creatives and practiced using off-camera flash until the sun set down. I had not used a strobe in a while and I by no means am an expert using them. Closest thing I had practiced with was with a Godox speedlight, but we all helped each other. Needless to say, we all got a decent amount of shots, some with flash and some with natural light. It was HOT this weekend, but the sunlight was just perfect.

I'm eager to continue practicing and networking with other creatives and models! If you know of any small groups in the DC, Maryland or Virginia that are gathering for photoshoots AND are safely observing COVID-19 protocols, please get in touch with me! I'd love to keep this momentum going.

Looking back at my first photos, you sometimes think, how did I start all this?

Sometimes we concentrate so much on doing good work that we forget we’ve come a long way and that our first photo was the first stepping stone into something wonderful.

I got my first DSLR camera sometime in 2012 and I cannot stress how much time I spent shooting in Auto. Between school, moving, finding a job, it took me awhile to learn photography basics, but I am so glad to be where I am today. I am by no means saying I am rock star or an expert in this, but I happy to say that the photos I take today are way different than the ones I took 5 years ago, and that to me is something.

Not everybody learns at the same rate or has the artistic touch, but I am satisfied with just knowing there has been progress and that I can continue doing my best to learn. The best feeling in the world is knowing you have tomorrow to continue trying. Tell me, how do you feel when looking at your first photo, or your first memory of something that you’re good at today?one somet

First weekend of quarantine resulted in good productivity. I’m glad to have been able to make the best of this to make a good IG plan of posting as well as thinking ahead to edit my pictures. Not that long ago, I would only edit one photo at a time, and then I would go ahead and post not thinking too much about how my IG grid would end up looking. Thank God I outgrew that mindset.

Also, let’s continue celebrating the warm weather, although we’re not going out much. I’m just hopeful that when this is all over, we can all go out and shoot, pose, direct, jump and do more without the worry of layering up all the time. Also, lots of doggy walks!

Well, it’s almost Friday and here we are! We’re almost done with one week, guys! Hopefully, you’ve been able to keep yourself busy and took a stab at learning something new or even went back to practicing your old hobby. Whatever it is you tried, take this time away from crowds to becoming a more creative person and continue expanding that ever-growing skillset. Grab a book, binge watch that series you’ve been eyeing, or even learn American Sign Language. You do you, make the best of it and have fun.

Walking into the weekend like...

MALE MODELS: During this shoot with my (almost) namesake Emanuele, I was telling him that I needed more men in my portfolio since for every one photo of a man, I have around 3-5 photos of women. Nothing wrong with that, but I think it would be great to show some male talent. I'm sure there's gotta be someone who would like to give it a shot!

Where are the men? Each person has their own set of traits that make them appealing and I would love to add some male photos to my portfolio. We can get creative and figure out what poses work and look into some options. To me, it's a fun exercise to see what works, and what doesn't. Once we find something we like, we take it from there and improve our process.

If you have a male friend that is looking to get a photo taken, tag them below. We'll make something happen!
