A long email I received that made my ArtPrize experience the best!
Hi Chuck!
I had to reach out to share a story about your piece that is currently at the Gerald R Ford Museum in Grand Rapids.
My niece, Beatrice, and I went out for a couple hours last week to stretch our legs in the city and see some art. We looked at all the installations outside the museum, but she was really more interested in the busy squirrels. I figured if the interactive pieces didn't catch her attention we'd be in and out of the museum pretty quick. That's OK, she'll be three next month, so attention isn't always a commodity available to her.
We went inside the building and she was very interested with all the bustle and looking at the art, but when we got to your piece she was in awe. She just stood, mouth open, sighing. She almost whispered to ask what the title was and what the card under it said. We talked about your artist's statement and overwhelm, and how she feels when she has big feelings and we breath together. She just kept staring in such detail, noting how her face wasn't visible and sighing and whispering 'breathe.' We talked about how this art really made her feel some big feelings and how great art makes us feel in our bodies and she kept holding her chest and belly and nodding. We probably stood there for 10 minutes - a lifetime in toddler time.
It was past nap time so I wondered if she was in a trance and prodded her to see the other work, but she just kept asking to go back to your picture. We had to visit again after the bathroom and one more time before we left.
I make a point of not having my phone tracking her every activity as a small person, but she asked to have her photo taken with 'the white picture.' and I spent the rest of the day showing it to her. I've included it below. She was very solemn about the whole thing.
She immediately told her parents and sisters about it when she got home and multiple times a day asks to see her picture and the photo of the white picture. She took her parents and little sister back to see it a week later and knew as they were coming to the doors that this was the home of the white picture.
Since then we all have lots of discussions with Bea about art - making it, and seeing it, and appreciating it. Thanks for sharing your work with the world - you have lit a fire in a small girl in Michigan and you will be part of our family lore for years to come!
Hope this story brightened your day!
Cheers,
