During my second trip to Alaska, I hiked a trail along the Savage River in Denali National Park. I stopped along the trail to photograph some Fireweed when a Ranger walking by shared these words with me:

“When Fireweed Turns To Cotton, Summer Is Soon Forgotten.”

It’s an old Alaskan proverb, and there is so much truth in it. Just as the leaves falling from the trees signal winter’s approach, the soft, cotton seeds of Fireweed drifting on the wind are one of nature’s reminders that autumn is just around the corner. The gentle way nature quietly tells us when the seasons are changing is wonderful. 🌻🍂🪾🌱

🙏Thank you to everyone who reached out and sent much needed prayers our way this past week. Our last appointment did not go as well as we had hoped, but it wasn't totally devastating either. Sometimes, the journey ahead is more of a marathon with your feet tied together than a peaceful stroll, but we're going to keep moving forward, and with continued faith and a dedicated medical team, we have hope.🙏

❤️ A little update from me…

I want to apologize to all of my wonderful followers for not posting as frequently lately. There’s a good reason for my absence.

Just before the Fourth of July, my fiancé had an accident that significantly injured his spine. Unfortunately, things have continued to go downhill since then, and we’ve spent a lot of time traveling back and forth to southern Maine for appointments and consultations with specialists.

On Monday, we meet with the surgeon, and we’re hoping to finally have a clear path forward.

I’ll continue to share photos and posts from the waiting rooms and hotels whenever I can. Photography and sharing the beauty of the Northwoods are still very much a part of my heart, it’s just been a little harder to keep up lately.

In the meantime, I would truly appreciate it if you would keep us in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️🙏

Thank you for your patience, kindness, and continued support. It means more than you know.

Enjoy today. Take it in. Find something that makes your soul dance, and never take the ordinary moments for granted. 🍃💚

This handsome Bull Moose was stripping the leaves off of the branches when he turned to watch a rabbit zoom by. The rabbit spied me, but the bull never did. I was able to take a few photos, then walk in the opposite direction without disturbing his late afternoon meal... MHL🌲ME

Have you ever noticed how a moose rarely seems to eat alone? 🫎💦

Like in this video, when a moose wades into the water to feed, it creates a delicious buffet for its feathered neighbors. As it pulls aquatic vegetation from the bottom, it stirs up insects and vegetation all around their massive body, and that activity doesn’t go unnoticed.

Chimney Swifts are aerial insectivores, meaning they catch and eat their food entirely on the wing. They take advantage of the insects stirred up by the moose, swooping and diving above the water to grab an easy meal. In fact, 100% of a Chimney Swift’s food is eaten on the fly! 🪽

Then there are the Mallards, who seem to know exactly where the leftovers will be. They often wait behind a feeding moose, taking advantage of the aquatic vegetation and bits of food the moose leaves floating in its wake. 🦆

Moose are incredibly independent animals and are perfectly content spending much of their time on their own. While they may not need companionship, they seldom eat alone. Their feeding activity creates welcome opportunities for an entire little community of wildlife to join them for meals in the water.

One moose feeding in the shallows can become a dinner bell for the creatures around it. Nature is full of these quiet connections. You just have to slow down long enough to notice them. 🌿🫎🦆🪽

The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal on Earth. In level flight it can reach speeds of 60 mph, and when diving, it can exceed 240mph...🤯

These incredible raptors prey mostly on other birds, striking them at tremendous speeds with their powerful talons. The impact can be so forceful that it often kills their prey instantly.⚡

Peregrine Falcons also have a transparent third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, that acts like a pair of goggles, protecting their eyes during those breathtaking dives.🥽

Even more amazing, their nostrils contain small bony structures called tubercles that help regulate the intense airflow rushing into their nasal passages, allowing them to breathe during high-speed dives without damaging their lungs.🫁

Nature truly built these birds of prey for speed, precision, and power.💪🤩👊
