A Slight (2 out of 5) risk for severe weather across more of the state today. The main threat will be damaging winds.

"Deep-layer flow/shear will be even weaker into parts of the southern Mid-Atlantic/Carolinas vicinity. However, very strong heating of a moist airmass will support potential for scattered thunderstorms with downburst potential, and eventual evolution into loosely organized clusters capable of damaging outflow winds this afternoon through at least the early evening hours."

It's the 15th anniversary of the tornado outbreak in North Carolina.

24 lives were lost that day in NC, including 12 in my birthplace Bertie County, where an EF3 tornado devastated parts of Askewville and surrounding communities.

While the risk has dropped slightly with not as much sun to warm the column, there is still a risk when the main line comes through this afternoon.

Today is a Weather-Aware Day for our region. A strong cold front will be pushing through this afternoon bringing with it an elevated change of severe weather.

The NOAA NWS Storm Prediction Center has portions of central NC under a Marginal (4 out of 5) risk for severe weather. Go to https://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html for the latest.

The main threats are damaging winds (in excess of 70 MPH possible) tornados (some could be EF2 or higher) with a lesser threat of damaging hail.

Have multiple ways to receive warnings today.
