"Shades"

Happy Friday! I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend!

I was blessed to spend some time with friends, though a couple of our little group were absent and missed at Doughton Park, back last summer. Doughton Park is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina.

This day had many different weather fronts, rain, clouds and even some sunshine at the last minute before I left.

I liked this image as there were blue skies and lots of puffy white clouds and the sun was shining on them and creating shade on the hills and the valley.

"Fields of Gold"

As we approach the end of another week, I hope you are all well and are able to go out and enjoy some fall colors!

In the early summer, I was blessed to spend some time with the whole gang. We intrepid hikers and photographers headed out to Roan Mountain. This is located on the North Carolina / Tennessee border. This particular photo was on the Tennessee side.

Summer is NOT my favorite season but, the colors were amazing. Golden flowers, contrasting against the rich green grass, the amazing trees and look at those blue skies and amazing white clouds! Such a beautiful scene. I can't wait to go back!

"The Last Light"

I hope this finds you well and ready for the weekend. I hope you can get out and enjoy some fall colors.

A few months ago, I was blessed to help a friend celebrate their birthday. They took me to one of their favorite spots along the Blue Ridge Parkway "somewhere" west of Asheville. Though I suppose to Blue Ridge Parkway nomenclature, "south."

Anyway, it was a Beautiful day and it was a beautiful sunset. I was able to create multiple photos and a few I didn't hate.

This particular one was created just before the last light of the day. I loved the angle and the stone, the plant and the flowers soaking up the very last of the sunshine, until another day.

"She's Got Legs!"

Happy Friday

I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend.

Borrowing from the old ZZ Top song (what a band), I couldn't help it.

I love macro photography but, I don't do it as much as I used to. There is just never enough time for everything. The older we get, the more we realize that.

A few months ago, I photographed this at Doughton Park along the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. I met some friends and we met a friend we had talked to for years but had not had the opportunity to meet.

We did a lot of photography that day, after the rain.

I spotted this little lady on a yellow flower just drinking that magic nectar. If you look closely (although Facebook's algorithm tends to destroy image quality), you can see the legs, the spots, everything. I just love the macro world.

"Virginia's Apex"

Happy Friday!

I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend.

Some good friends and I did this hike back in February 2020. It was the next to the last hike I did before the pandemic.

I was blessed to spend time with some good friends. When we started out at the trailhead, I think it was 14 degrees. Maybe less?

I had been wanting to hike to the summit of Mount Rogers for some time. I had been to Grayson Highlands State Park many times before (and since) but had not been to the summit.

Everyone always told me there are not any views from the summit of Mount Rogers, don't go. That did not deter me. While it is true there are no sweeping vistas but, to say there are no views would be incorrect. It is an alpine forest with spruce and fir. The smells were absolutely amazing and unforgettable. The smells in the winter with snow compared to the summer are not even comparable. The winter smells win.

I was blessed this summer to lead a good friend to the summit so I have done it multiple times now. It is so beautiful up there. It is a long hike, I think 9 miles round trip from Massey Gap. I think 8 miles from Elk Garden. It is 100% worth it. It is not for those who are not seasoned hikers though. It is not a stroll through the woods. If you are an experienced hiker, you can do this.

At the top of that rock in the center is a survey marker that marks it as the highest point in Virginia. For trivia, there are two survey markers at the summit.

"Elk River Falls"

Happy Friday, I hope this finds you all well and ready for another weekend!

A few months ago, I was blessed to spend the weekend with some good friends. Good camping and good hiking.

To end the trip, we checked off a place I have been trying to get to for a number of years but couldn't quite fit it in. I decided on the way home, I was going. We went to shoot it that day and the skies were just not ... cooperating. They were in the opposite direction of course.

The waterfall is probably three times taller than I expected it to be. Still not a massive one but, it sure is pretty. I wish there had been a little more blue skies to go with the clouds behind it though.

It is Always a blessing to spend time with those you care about though. I hope you can this weekend.

"Home on the Range"

Happy Friday, I hope this finds you all ready for the weekend!

Since last week was ablaze with color, I thought this week, I would take us back in time. This looks like a pasture from an old western movie.

I shot this month or so ago along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina. The clouds were Magnificent. They were simply amazing and when I happened upon the cattle grazing I the field, I knew I had to photograph it. I did multiple compositions but, I liked the one of the cows through the slots in the fence.

I don't often do black and white photos. When I started shooting back in 1975 and then started having images posted in the newspapers, they required everything be in black and white, not color. After I stopped doing that, I refused to shoot anything but color for Years. Still now, I don't often convert something to black and white / monochrome. I reserve it for things I like. There was another from that day that I liked that I converted to monochrome but, it looks too similar to another recent post so maybe I will post someday, just not now.

"Ablaze with Color"

Happy Friday! I hope you are all well and ready for the weekend.

Several weeks ago a good friend and I were discussing going to Doughton Park. Literally, minutes later, another friend did a post wanting to do a get together at Doughton. We really couldn't make it that weekend but, we were able to schedule for the following weekend and everyone got to meet!

These purple flowers are called "Blazing Stars" and the yellow, well, I don't know what they are called. Mixing that to the green grass, beautiful blue skies, white clouds, the scene was set ablaze with colors.

If you have never heard of Doughton Park, it is a beautiful place located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina. Due to construction, it is challenging to get to at the moment but, there is one way in and one way out.

These flowers are in full bloom for one to two weekends every year and it is very difficult to get it just right. With the help of Mandy Gallimore and Bonita Loggins, I was able to arrive just in time for the show. Both are Fantastic Photographers. Please check them both out.

"After Sunrise"

I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend.

Last spring, a good friend and I planned an excursion to Linville Gorge in Western North Carolina. It is one of my favorite places, I have been going there for years.

We planned to get up Very Early to shoot the Sunrise from Wiseman's View and we did. It was Amazing. I love that spot, you are hanging off of a mountain on one side of the gorge looking across at the other side. So Beautiful. I love to watch the sun rise between Hawksbill and Table Rock.

I got some absolutely beautiful shots of the actual sunrise. So beautiful. Not because they are my photos, God created the show, I was just there to watch. Then I roamed around as I tend to do, one time when I disappeared from this spot, they thought I fell off. It could happen. You have to do that find the shots. In fact, my favorite shot of 2022 was taken that morning from ... 50 feet or so away from this. Both that photo and a photo of the sunrise have already been published on my page.

While roaming around, I found this spot with the rhododendron below the tree, the sun shining through it, Hawksbill behind it, the gorge below it, this was a great time to be there as the sun continued to rise. We were also blessed with blue skies and beautiful white clouds!

It is always great to be out enjoying nature and spending it with your friends and family. My only regres are that I am not just a little bit taller to see Hawksbill better above that tree limb and the rest of the normal group could not attend.

"It Was Worth It"

Happy Friday!

I hope you are all well and ready for the weekend.

This is a photo from October 2021. For whatever reason, I only edited a few photos from that trip. I was wondering "What happened to the photo where I fell?" Now, if you are my good friend that took me to this waterfall, he will say "which time you fell?" If you know, you know. He does. LOL

I met a Good Friend of mine and we decided to hike to Crabtree Falls. This is located in Western North Carolina and the trailhead is on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We got some nice photos along the way. When we got to the bottom, I saw it for the first time and it was as beautiful as I heard it was, even more so in person. Below this point, there is a little bridge that crosses the creek. "Most" photos are from the other side of the creek. While I made that obligatory shot, I am always looking for something other than what everyone else shoots.

So, after getting my "I was there" shot on my cards, I started roaming around. I got down low and tried some stuff from that side and then decided to go back across the bridge try some compositions from there.

I was trying to get a good angle and get down low and a different view. I got down there, slipped busted my six, there was a young couple on the bridge that saw it and looked like "did he break something?" I was fine and while I was down there, I composed this and got the shot.

Yes, it was worth it. All I injured was my pride and at my age, that means nothing.

I got another shot from near there that I like too but, this one is definitely my personal favorite from Crabtree Falls.

When you end up on your six, look around, you might find a good view while you are down there. (It has happened to me more than once.)

Have a Great Day!!

"The Sky is the Limit"

Happy Friday. I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend. I hope you all have some nice adventures planned.

In July, I was blessed to be asked to come hiking with a friend on their birthday. I accepted and we had quite the adventure!

We had a completely different hike "planned" but there were things that arose and we modified our plans and that was great. Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.

Our plan was to do a loop starting at Black Balsam and while we did summit Black Balsam (which is behind me in this photo), we took a different trail. After reaching the summit, hydrating, we decided to hike out a little ways to a little ... hilltop for lack of a better term. Somewhere we missed the little turn to go to that and stayed on the bigger, well worn trail. I started thinking "why are we going down? We should be going up."

We looked at AllTrails and decided that was the route to Tennent Mountain and decided "what the heck?" So, we hiked out that direction. I am so glad we did.

Before that day, I had never heard of Tennent Mountain. I had never been to Black Balsam but had heard of it.

The sky and the clouds that day were simply amazing. We had blue skies, darker blue skies, beautiful clouds, a few angry clouds passed us by. If you have followed me for long, you know I love blue skies and white clouds so, I was in heaven photographically. From the heat, I thought I was on my way elsewhere.

This is the view of Tennent Mountain from it's base. You can see the mountain, the blue skies, white clouds, a flame azalea, some yellow flowers and did I mention the skies?

The views from the top were absolutely amazing. You could see Looking Glass Rock and John Rock on the other side of Graveyard Fields. You could see out to Cold Mountain and so many peaks that I could not begin to name them. I am no expert. You could see into so many valleys as well with the sun coming through the clouds and making light and dark spots on the ground.

It was a great day to spend in the mountains with a good friend and blessed to have their friendship. A couple of friends from our group were absent and missed.

Have a Great Weekend!

"Gateway to the Clouds"

Happy Friday, I hope this finds you all well and ready for the weekend!

A couple of Sundays ago a friend and I met another person we had been talking to for years but had never had the pleasure to meet at Doughton Park, located along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina.

The local weather that morning had called for a clear day with maybe an afternoon shower. It then rained about four hours. C'est La Vie!

We met, had a nice lunch at the Bluffs and waited out the rain on the porch of the old lodge. Once the rain stopped we went out and got some photos but the sky was still bad. We waited it out longer and the blue started to erupt through the clouds.

We met up to photograph the beautiful wildflowers and we did, those photos will come in the weeks and months ahead on these weekly posts.

After the sun finally broke through, there were some Amazing Clouds, such as these. Anyone that has ever photographed there knows this location and it is a favorite of mine. Would you look at that blue sky and Amazing Clouds! My photo does not even do it justice. If you look you can see where the sun shines through to light some places and others are shaded, shadows falling in other locations. This was my favorite photo of the day.

More to come from that trip and other recent trips.

Have a Great Day!!
