Navajo Nation PRCA Rodeo - Youth Barrel Racing

The first rider I didn’t get to photo shoot completely.

I got to spend part of today covering youth rodeo in Ganado and saw a lot of future riders in the arena. A few were even fortunate enough to ride in last night’s first performance.

It’s always fun watching the next generation learn, grow and chase the same dreams that many of today’s top riders started with.

The moon is putting on a near-full performance tonight—waxing gibbous at 98% illumination, glowing like it’s already crossed the finish line 🌕

Shot this just before it tips fully into that classic full moon look.

I still remember the first time I tried to photograph the moon. Full moon. Clear sky. Big expectations.

My little Nikon D5200… ISO 6400… 300mm variable lens. I thought I was ready. I wasn’t.

I didn’t understand it yet. The exposure, the reach, the patience it takes to pull something out of the sky that far away.
I walked away that night disappointed.

Fast forward to this evening.
Now I’ve got options.

200–500mm f/5.6 or
200–400mm f/4 with a 1.7x
70–200mm f/2.8 with a 2.0x

I went with reach. As far as I could push it.

Three different settings. Testing, adjusting, chasing detail.

And honestly… it doesn’t even matter if it’s the best moon photo.
What matters is getting the shot.

Because once you finally understand it…
you’re not just looking at the moon anymore.
You’re working with it.

Associating with photographers is always one of the best parts of covering games like this. I got to meet some pretty cool shooters along the way.
One brief but meaningful moment came at the end of the game when I finally met (standing behind the Turnover Cactus Sword). A fellow Diné from Tuba City and part of the University of Arizona media crew. I remember coming across his profile and following him months ago, so it was good to finally put a face to the name.

Wish we had more time to talk like I did with some other peers, but moments like that still matter.

Give him a follow.
