Every December, members of the Lakota (Sioux) tribes in North and South Dakota ride 280 mi/450 km on horseback for 15 days. They follow in the footsteps of Chief Big Foot’s tribe whose 300 members, mainly women and children, were massacred at Wounded Knee on December 29th 1890.

Mehmet Demirci (b. 1978) is a Turkish-born
photojournalist based in North Carolina. He has covered
major global events, including the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. From 2012 to
2016, he served as Chief Photographer to Turkey’s 11th
President, Abdullah Gül.

“When I first held a camera in my hands back in 1992, I never imagined that this magical box would impact my life so deeply, or that I would eventually build my entire life around it. Another thing I never imagined was the idea of having children with my
beloved wife. But that idea became a reality, and today I am the proud and happy father of two wonderful human beings. I can honestly say that this is the greatest project I have ever undertaken.“
