This heat will be dangerous for folks outside the next few days. Heat indexes up to 107°-108° can be expected. Stay inside if possible and hydrate more than you think you need if outside!

The comments on this post are baffling. Almost everyone seems to think this was a tornado so here’s a little bit of education for yall.

A tornado is rapidly rotating column of air. The damage from a tornado shows clearly circular, blender-like patterns over a relatively small, concentrated area.

Most damaging winds from storms come in the form of “straight line winds.” This is just the rain and rain-cooled air falling out of the storm, hitting the ground, and spreading out over large areas. The damage from these winds show a clear straight pattern where everything is blown in one direction, more like a broom than a blender.

When a storm is producing damaging straight line winds, the leading edge of those winds is called the “gust front.” When the gust front moves along, it will kick up dirt and small debris. Sometimes, you’ll get little eddies that “look” like tornadoes but are more in line with dust devils. We call them “gustnadoes.” But remember - these are NOT tornadoes. If there was an actual tornado in this video, the motion would be much more intense and whipping around like a blender.

Always important to know the distinction between tornadoes and straight line winds. Take it from me - I’ve seen the inside of tornadoes and this video is NOTHING compared to actual tornadoes. This has been my TedTalk. 🤣

We chased this supercell for hours through northeast Kansas on 5/18/26. The storm struggled to produce tornadoes due to the cold air at the surface from the previous day’s storms.
