Completed in 1877 (and rebuilt in 1911), this isn't just any railroad crossing—it was the first cantilever bridge in the United States and once held the title of the tallest bridge in the world. Standing nearly 275 feet above the Kentucky River, it was a massive engineering gamble for the Cincinnati Southern Railway that paid off, connecting the North and South in a way few other structures could.
The views are breathtaking, with the deep river gorge and the limestone cliffs of the Palisades stretching out for miles. But there’s a real edge to filming here.
One look down and you realize exactly why this spot has a reputation.
It’s still a major thoroughfare for Norfolk Southern. The vibration of a freight train crossing that high up is something you feel in your chest even from the riverbank.
The wind through the gorge can be unpredictable, making any technical work (like drone flight) a game of constant adjustment.
I had a blast filming this landmark. There’s something special about seeing those industrial steel rivets contrasted against the natural green of the Jessamine County landscape. It’s a place that demands respect, but for a photographer, the payoff is worth every bit of the difficulty.
What’s your favorite spot along the Kentucky River?
Remember, its dangerous and ILLEGAL to climb onto the bridge itself. Enjoy its majesty from the amazing overlook located at Highbridge park right next to it.
