I'm doing well with restricted activity but missing loon time. So I went through photos from the 3 days from hatch day on 7/10 to when they left the nest and remaining egg behind on 7/12. Some I've posted before but some you haven't seen. It is a special time when they bond, start feeding and training the little one (aka Sassy) before they head out of the cove and into the lake. I felt so privileged that they trusted me to observe them during this time. Sassy is now almost 4 weeks old. I hope to get some new photos soon.

I'm going to be having a few weeks of restricted activity starting tomorrow so I won't be posting any new adventures for a bit. But I will be catching up with filling card orders for individuals and stores, ordering more small cards and getting some enlargements for other customers. If you are thinking of getting the perfect enlargement (or cards) this would be the time to get in touch. Like something on my web site? Perfect. Interested in something I posted on FB? Sure. Want something but not sure what? I can help with that.

Sassy at Sweet Sixteen (days, of course). I spent some time with Sassy and family tonight. I found one adult diving and preening and then it headed off towards Sassy and the other adult. They all seemed very relaxed, often approaching me or letting me drift towards them. At one point an eagle flew over and one adult called out but no one seemed too alarmed and the eagle was just passing through. Sassy has grown so much and the parents are doing a great job feeding but Sassy is also putting its head underwater a lot looking for food. Just a nice family night out on the lake.

Another kayak stroll. The Retreat Meadows in Brattleboro, VT with its thousands of lotus blossoms, inlets, birds, animals makes the perfect spot to explore, especially on a gorgeous summer day with a good friend. So take a little meander with me to see just some of what I saw.

I've invented a new phrase - a Kayak Stroll. It's when you head out in the early morning or late afternoon and just slowly take in what's around you - no hurry, no rush, just drifting and observing. Last night with the gorgeous light I took a stroll with 10 day old Sassy and parents. They swam lazily around, knowing I was there but knowing they were safe. Others joined us - osprey, great blue herons, eagle (who respectfully just sat in a tree), snapper, wood ducks. No drama - just a quiet summer evening.

Last night's visit to the Harriman eagles. The juvie was on its preferred limb to the right of the nest. Just as before, it kept calling out and calling out...and calling out. It finally went to the left of the nest and then an adult come in hot - but not to the nest and not with food. It spent a huge amount of time preening and ignoring the juvie. Eventually. it went to the nest and the juvie got all excited and crashed into the adult as it jumped down, too. In the last photo you can see its reaction when it realized it still didn't get dinner.
What was fun was all the people who came to look at the nest - young/old, regulars/new folk. All were entranced.

Eagle update. You might have noticed that I've been a little loon obsessed lately but I finally got down to the eagles nest tonight. When I last posted the juvie was in the woods. Although we did know that it was able to get a fish or 2 it was often calling out and it was a little worrisome. Well, tonight it kept calling out but it was at the nest tree - so all is well except it still expects food deliveries. One adult was way up on the ridge line obviously with ear plugs in. Juvie was doing some impressive jumps and flaps but didn't fly. It's going to have to learn to catch its own dinner soon - but at least it's not in the woods.

Turning point. In the loon world one chick hatches and then usually 24-48 hours later the 2nd one hatches. But what if it doesn't? The adults need to take care of the first chick and, for lack of a better phrase, get on with their lives. I believe I saw that decision being make. It was more than 48 hrs. since hatch. The adults and chick were at the nesting raft. Then, all of a sudden the adult on the nest got up and swam away. The 3 of them swam around in the cove, fed the chick, the chick played. Then one adult swam out of the cove. The other adult, with the chick on its back, went over to the raft and I thought was going to climb up. No. It looked at the egg, turned and swam off with the chick following it out of the cove. It seemed like a very conscious decision to me. What an amazing thing to witness.
