SWIPE to see some before and after photos of the River Arts District in Asheville, NC.

I was there covering the destruction of Hurricane Helene starting on September 28, 2024; right after the storm hit. Over the next year, I spent months in the mountains capturing the recovery. It was bittersweet going back up now, two months shy of the two year anniversary. So much has changed but it’s obvious the landscape and people are forever different.

Having combat veterans share their stories with me and show me what deeply personal mementos they carried with them while fighting is one of the most important projects I have done. It is incredibly meaningful; it’s hard to describe how honored I feel.

I’ll be sharing more about Russ who so graciously told me about his deployments and memories. The photo he had imprinted on a dog tag of his daughter and wife was special. He also had another significant memento that will get its own post. Thank you Russ.
