It has been two weeks since this amazing solar storm and the data coming out on it has been very interesting. NASA said they would be studying this solar storm for years. It is not over yet either, this sunspot just gave off another solar flare this time directed towards Mars and this one was the largest one yet.

With tractors humming in the distance planting the fields into the darkness of the night, mother nature left the light on for them in the form of the Northern Lights.

Spring is a fantastic time to visit Mackinac Island. The spring flowers are everywhere. If you miss the tulip bloom, the lilac bloom is just around the corner. If you're lucky you might even find a secret garden!

I can't believe it has already been a week since we had the most amazing display of the northern lights in 20 years. I loved that every direction we looked was different. To the north we saw green, above we saw all the colors and we saw reds to the south. We are officially spoiled.

What an amazing night to see the northern lights. You could see them no matter what way you looked. The colors changed from green to pink to red to purple. While the camera can see better than our eyes, we still saw the "Tie Dye In The Sky."

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I was able to make it out to the Debuck Tulip Fest last week and the tulips were beautiful. I loved the gazebo and little houses they had for photo opportunities.

Last Picture Of The Eclipse! I decided to do a composite image of the phases of the eclipse to better display what we witnessed. It was a beautiful transformation.

During the totality of the solar eclipse, I took as many photos as I could. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to capture "Baily's beads" or the "diamond ring" because it's not like you can practice for such an event. You set the settings you think will be right and hope it works out. The first image in this composite is of the first glimpse of totality. You can see the prominences (the red spots) on the top portion of the shot. Those were only there for seconds before the scene transformed into the second shot. In the second shot you can see the prominences on the bottom and the right. This is the scene that was visible the longest (over three minutes at our location). The third shot you can see the beginning of "Baily's beads." Baily's beads happens when the sunlight shines through the valleys on the edge of the moon. The prominences in this shot look as if they are connected to each other from the bottom to the right. You can see slight ridges in that connected line. The 4th shot the ridges in the moon's surface are much more defined. The 5th and final shot is of the diamond ring effect. These last shots happen within seconds of each other. All and all it was surreal to be able to witness and photograph it all.

After witnessing a total solar eclipse, I now understand the hype behind it. It is one of those unusual events that is hard to comprehend, similar to the northern lights. While we are told our whole life to not look at the sun we get this rare day, to do just that, look at the sun. While you cannot see in this image, you could actually see with your naked eye one solar flare and a few prominences coming off the sun (that picture will come later).

While mountain biking I couldn't help but stop and take this photograph. I loved that the sun was shining on the tamarack trees. The soft foreground of the marsh just added to the beauty of this scene.

Fall is a great time to visit the vineyards of Traverse City, Michigan. The cooler temperatures, the fall colors and the lack of visitors make it the ideal time for a wine tour. With rolling hills overlooking the Grand Traverse Bay, it's no wonder I keep finding myself coming back here time and time again.
