We saw this late Friday night after attending the State AA/B track meet in Missoula and two State AA softball wins by the Glacier Wolfpack.
Admittedly, it is hard to deny the quality of any of the 25 high school sports programs cited in this USA Today study.
As the ranking is based on surveys completed by student/athletes and parents, it might be influenced by participation volume and the motivations of the survey participants. Be that as it may, we like it!
However, instead of trying to negate any of the programs, as always, we offer positivity and would like to suggest several other schools could be easily included in this group of Montana's best.
With over 50 years of participation as athletes, as coaches, and current advocates of Montana high school sports, we'd like to offer that long-time success, tradition, and commitment to excellence by these schools should place them in consideration. Either as athletes or as coaches, we competed against them all! They were tough to beat!

Feel free to recommend your own!

Yesterday, we published our Photographer’s Favorites from the men’s events at the Western A Divisional Track and Field Meet in Frenchtown. Today, we’re following up with our outtakes from the women’s events. Although the weather was mostly cloudy on Friday, Saturday provided near-perfect weather for photography and high-quality track and field competition.
ArtwestimageSports.com staff saw the Hamilton Bronc women win a fairly tight team race with 97 points, while the host team, Frenchtown, scored 81 points for second. Defending champion Whitefish totaled 75.5 to round out the trophy-winning teams.
Hamilton’s Annalise Lewis won the 400 and 800-meter races, and anchored the Broncs' first-place mile relay quartet. Lewis’s time of 2:13.46 in the 800 broke a 30-year-old meet record held by Ronan’s Zeffy Moss.
The Broncs also got wins from Aubrey Korst in the pole vault, Gracie Werst in the shot put, and Aleigha Child in the 3,200-meter run.
Meet host Frenchtown got a huge effort from junior sprinter Blake Hardy, who won the 100 with a personal best 12.45 clocking, and in the 200-meter race. Her 25.61 effort was nearly that of a Corvallis sprinter while placing second in the 400-meter run. Hardy also ran anchor on both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relay quartets, and finished second and third place, respectively.
The Broncs also picked up wins in the javelin and the high jump. Sophomore Macey Kay Smith set a career-best mark in the jav, measuring an even 132 feet. That measure is second in Class A going into the Class A meet in Laurel beginning Friday.
Frenchtown senior Lacey Holleran cleared 5 feet to beat a host of jumpers at 4’10”. Sophomore Alexa Madland took second and third, respectively, in the discus and shot throws. Her toss of 36’7” in the shot put was a personal best.
Whitefish was paced by sophomore hurdler Ginger Bergland, who won the 300-meter hurdles and added a fourth place in the 200, while finishing third in the 400-meter race. Freshman Avery Orme won gold in the triple jump, outleaping the competition with a personal best leap of 36’8”.
Bulldog senior Sol Holmquist and classmate Margaret Zolich finished second in the javelin and high jump, respectively. Holmquist's throw of 113’2” was a career best, while Zolich’s 4’10” was good enough for silver.
A Friday highlight was Morgan Delaney’s record-setting effort in the 1,600-meter run. The Polson distance star legged out a time of 4:59.42 to overtake Bigfork’s Brooke Andrus’s 5:08.82 clocking set back in 2006. Libby’s distance ace, Capri Farmer, was second to Delaney in the 1600-meter race.
Another big Friday effort was made by Stevensville’s talented sophomore hurdler/jumper Reagan Johnstone. The diminutive Johnstone set a career best mark in the 100-meter hurdle race, blowing out her competition with a Class A best 14.85 clocking.
She followed that up in the long jump, where she dueled Stevi teammate Sophia Hutchinson for the event title. Johnston’s career best marking of 18’9.25” was better than Hutchinson’s personal best jump of 18”2.75”, with both being the top two distances in Class A. Frenchtown’s Alexis Daigle jumped 17-6” to take fourth place, and fourth overall on the classification going into the state meet this weekend.
Johnstone took second in both the 300-meter hurdles and the 200-meter race. Her time of 45 flat in the hurdle race was a personal record, as was her time of 25.64 in the 200.
Hutchinson contributed a second-place finish in the triple jump, as her 35’8.75” was a personal record. Yellowjacket sophomore Eva Brunell won the final event of the divisional meet, tossing the discus 117’5”.
The final running event of the day finished the meet with a bang, as the 1600-meter relay provided for the second and third fastest times in Class A this season, with Hamilton’s 4:04.52 outpacing the Whitefish foursomes’ time of 4:09.2. Only Custer County has a faster time in the race, covering the distance in 4:02.67.

Last Friday and Saturday, ArtwestimageSports.com staff were in Frenchtown, where we saw the Bigfork Vikings win the men’s competition at the Western Class A Divisional Track and Field meet. The Vikis scored points with a vengeance in the sprints, hurdles, jumps, and in the relays to win by 21 points over second-place Corvallis.
Bigfork’s largest point totals came on the legs of two talented senior athletes in jumper Tamret Savik and speedster Robert Merchant, who combined to score 63 of the Vikings’ 114 points.
Savik went big in the triple jump, when he leapt a personal best 48’3” on his last attempt in the finals. In addition to being a meet record, it is currently the longest high school effort in Montana high school track, and would be a Class A record if equaled this weekend. Savik’s outstanding effort surpassed the Western A record by almost two feet, with Whitefish’s Chris Hicks distance of 46’4.6” lasting for twenty years.
Savik also set a personal best in the high jump, clearing 6’5”, beating the second-place opponent, Dylan Owens of Columbia Falls, by five inches. Beaverhead’s Canin Christiansen won the long jump, setting his career best mark of 22’1”, which was over a foot better than Savik’s 20’10”.
Though Savik’s magnificent day contributed 28 points to the Vikings’ championship effort, it was exceeded by senior classmate Robert Merchant, who took all three sprint races and was the anchor on both of the Vikings’ victorious relay squads.
Merchant started by winning the 400-meter run, covering the oval in a career best 48.78. Merchant followed that race by helping teammates Quinn Kerr, Austin Savik, and Tayden West run a team best 42.77 in the short relay. The time set a new meet record, surpassing the old standard of 43.21, which was held by Corvallis and Columbia Falls.
Saturday, Merchant opened his day by racing to win the 100-meter finals, going the distance in 10.9 seconds. Later in the day, Merchant blitzed his competition in the 200 -meter run, legging out a 21.88 clocking, which set a new meet standard. After his 200 win, Merchant joined his relay teammates to run a team best 3:26.82 clocking in the 1600-meter relay.
In addition to his contribution on the Bigfork relays, Viking senior Austin Savik outclassed the field in the 110-meter hurdles, running the distance in a personal best time of 15.23. Savik also overcame a slow start to finish third in the 300 hurdles.
Frenchtown ninth-grader Jared Nygard got an upset victory in running a personal record 40.42 to beat Browning’s Robert Miller by eight hundredths of a second.
Another Frenchtown athlete, senior Henry Griffin, continued to dominate the shot and discus throw competitions in western Montana. The Montana State track and field commit tossed the shot a career-best 59’10” on Friday, and followed that mark by winning the discus on Saturday. In that event, he beat Hamilton’s Taylor Doleac by twelve feet, with his longest effort of 180’8”.
In the only distance race on Friday, Polson’s David DiGiallonardo put up a time of 4:23.76, which was almost six seconds faster than Corvallis runner Taggart Jessop.
The best race on Saturday was in the 800-meter run, where Browning’s River Racine edged Hamilton’s Brayden Lanser at the tape to win with a career best 1:56.56.
Columbia Falls senior Joe West defeated Libby’s Tristan Andersen in the javelin, where the familiar Northwest A division foes went head-to-head. West heave of 168’ was a career best, surpassing Anderson’s 164’8” to set up another good competition at this weekend’s state meet in Billings.
Polson’s Isaac Kinnick cleared 12’6” to win the pole vault, beating Columbia Falls’ Tristian Archuletta, Frenchtown’s Ryder Haskins, and Libby’s Gabe Kosters, who all managed twelve feet.
Men’s runner-up, Corvallis, won just one of seventeen events, which was Taggart Jessop’s victory in the 3,200-meter race. The Blue Devil’s junior speedster Ayden Spencer placed second in both the 100 and 200-meter races, and finished third in the discus with a personal best toss of 164’9”.
Third-place Columbia Falls finished with 73 points, which was 20 fewer than Corvallis. Host team Frenchtown scored 61 points to round out the top four in the team race.

If we were not already committed to several other season-ending state tournaments, we'd be sure to catch the Class A/B state baseball tournament in Polson. It appears to be wide open, but watch for teams from Dillon and Billings to excel. Good luck, Cats, Dawgs, Viks, and Broncs! Baseball is alive and well in Northwest Montana!

The eight-team Class A-B state baseball tournament begins Thursday at 10 a.m. in Polson with first-round action. Billings Central is the reigning All-Class state champion, but Dillon is undefeated.

Thursday, May 28, ArtwestimageSports.com staff begins a three-day sojourn of state tournament sporting events in Northwest Montana, at Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell. Beginning at 8 am, the first round of the Class AA state tennis tournament begins with 32 matches in singles and doubles competitions. We’ll be on site for the entire first round, with Glacier Wolfpack athletes as our focus for the day.
Following that six-hour session, we’ll make the trip to Missoula, where we will be covering the State AA/B track meet, as well as the State AA softball tournament. The track meet is at Missoula Big Sky High School’s complex, with the softball tournament just down the road at the Fort Missoula Sporting Complex.
We’re planning on checking out the Class AA and B girls pole vault finals as soon as we get to Missoula on Thursday, with those two events kicking off the state track meet beginning at 4 PM.
Friday, we’ll start at 9:00 am with the opening field events at the Class AA/B meet and then check out the softball action in the afternoon. Our softball schedule will revolve around the play of the Glacier Wolfpack, who come into the tournament with the Western A regular season crown already to their credit.
We’ll be hoping for the best of the Wolfpack at the track and field meet as well, with both the men's and women's squads earning the Western AA division titles last week at Vigilante Stadium in Helena. We’ll also be watching Flathead performers as well, with William Hollensteiner hopefully making a strong comeback after being shelved for much of the season with a leg injury. Hollensteiner led the Braves to the Class AA men’s state championship last spring.
We’re hoping for an exciting weekend of action, although Mother Nature is busy brewing some impactful weather, with storm tracks bringing moisture from the South Pacific. When we used to live in Las Vegas, broadcasters called those El Niño weather patterns the “Monsoon Season”, usually taking place in August, and not in May! We’ll pack our rain gear, just in case.
Last weekend, we were at FVCC for the North AA Divisional tennis tourney, which brought the four Class AA schools from both Kalispell and Great Falls together to contest for spots at this week’s state meet. Four singles players and four doubles teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions qualified for the state event.
As expected, the CMR men outdueled Glacier 49-35 in their competition, with the Rustlers battling the evenly matched Wolfpack women’s team for the North AA title. Glacier, on the strength of two talented singles players and a surprisingly good pair of doubles teams, outscored CMR 48-45 to claim the divisional championship.
Fleming Daniel beat Flathead’s Rowan Alexander in straight sets to win the men’s singles competition. Glacier’s Colton Mantovani took down CMR’s Wiwo Batungbacal 6-3, 6-1 in the third/fourth place matchup.
CMR’s Eli Crist and Howard Daniel beat another CMR duo, Conner Sherman and Nick Stimack, 6-1, 6-0 to clinch the men’s doubles competition. Glacier’s Ethan Ronngren and Karson Stafford took third with a hard-fought 6-7, 7-5, 6-1 comeback win over Wolfpack teammates Josh Klippenstein and Axel Rauscher.
On the women’s side, CMR’s talented young singles player, Georgia Pike, cruised through four matches without surrendering a single game. The diminutive Pike overwhelmed Glacier’s Leilani Lennarz to take the women’s title with a barrage of fastball serves and sweeping forehand shots. Glacier’s Autumn Bashara outlasted CMR’s Carys Habel 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 to take the third-place seed.
The Wolfpack’s twin sister tandem of Cadence and Cassidy Daniels outpointed CMR’s Quincy Weymouth and Lola Habel 6-2, 2-6, and 6-1 for the women's doubles title. The senior duo both overcame knee injuries that occurred during basketball season in 2025 and have played well through the season, winning 18 of 21 matches. After missing last year’s state event, they’ll return to the state competition for the third time as a doubles tandem.
CMR rebounded in the consolation final, as the Rustlers’ Kenzie Engel and Chloe Wasilewski outlasted an upstart Glacier pair in Quinn Berkram and Rowyn Speer, by scores of 4-6, 7-5, and 7-5.
The Glacier duo were playing together for the first time, with Berkram’s previous partner suffering a season-ending injury just before the divisional tournament.
To get to the third-place match, the Berkram/Speer tandem had to overcome Glacier’s top-seeded pair in Miley Fritz and Reid Sanders in Round 7. In a hard-fought matchup between the familiar foes, the new partnered pair earned a 3-6, 7-6, and 6-4 upset win.
Looking forward to tomorrow’s tennis, we’ll be sure to take in the top-ranked athletes from Glacier and CMR, along with the heavily favored Missoula Hellgate Knights.
Until then, please LIKE, FOLLOW, and SHARE this post, which includes our Photographer’s Favorites from the North AA meet with someone who’d enjoy it. Friday and Saturday, May 22 and 23, ArtwestimageSports.com staff were in Frenchtown for the Western A Divisional Track and Field Meet. The 13-team event brought nearly 1,000 athletes to Lyle Bagnell Stadium at Frenchtown High School to compete for team trophies and qualify athletes for next weekend’s Class A State meet in Laurel.
The Bigfork Vikings ran away with the men’s Western A Divisional title with 114 points, beating second-place Corvallis by 21 points. The Blue Devils scored 93 points, followed by third-place Columbia Falls with 73. Meet host Frenchtown was fourth with 61.
In a tight race, the Hamilton Broncs continued their strong end-of-season performances, winning the women’s division with 97 points. Runner-up Frenchtown scored 81, and Whitefish totaled 75.5 to place third. Stevensville totaled 62 points to place fourth.
Bigfork senior Robert Merchant led the Vikings with 35 points, winning the 100, 200, and 400-meter runs, and running anchor on both the Vikings’ victorious 4 X 100 and 4 X 400-meter relay quartets. Teammate Tamret Savik added 28 points to the Bigfork effort, taking the high and triple jumps, while placing second in the long jump.
In the women’s division, the Broncs were led by junior Annalise Lewis, who was victorious in the 400 and 800-meter runs, and ran anchor on the Broncs’ gold medal-winning 4 X 400-meter relay foursome.
We photographed at least part of 30 of 34 events during the two-day event, and we'll have complete stories and our Photographer’s Favorites, one each for both the men’s and women’s meets, later in the week. For now, please LIKE, FOLLOW, and SHARE this post if you see someone you know!

05/22/2026

For the better part of the last week, the weather has been the biggest opponent for the majority of Flathead Valley’s high school athletic programs, with last Saturday’s Polson ABC Track Invitational as a prime example.
The ten-team affair, traditionally a Western A divisional tuneup, got off to a shaky start at 10 AM amid dark clouds, wind, and light rain, with a bit of hail during the meet's first hour.
In running or jumping events, athletes got out of their sweats just before competing, then scurried to get them back on in between jumps and/or races. The throwers, at least, just had to dry their implements off after each attempt, with many opting to keep their sweats or jackets on.
For us, we took an older camera body out of mothballs just for the occasion and continually checked our exposures, light meter, color balance, and shutter speed to stay within acceptable tolerances. For the most part, it was a struggle, or an outright failure.
We were beginning to reconsider the 60-mile drive down Polson Lake when, alas, the skies magically cleared, and warm, bright sunshine brought some badly needed comfort and relief.
For about an hour, it felt like Mother Nature had finally started to become an athletics fan.
By 12:30 PM, a massive storm front materialized over the ridge west of Polson, and within a half hour, the wind was blowing a gale, and rain pelted the stadium hard enough to have coaches summoned to a tent near the finish line.
A track official announced that the, “Radar shows a 90-minute squall followed by a brief pause, followed by more rain, so what do you want to do?” It was then that nine school bus drivers were texted to “Start your engine, we’ve had enough.”
Even though the ABC lasted less than three hours, we did get to take in some nice performances. The best was from Polson miler Morgan Delaney, who had the finest race of her career.
During the beautiful middle hour, Delaney dueled Hamilton’s Annalise Lewis for over three laps, then sprinted to a 4:59.9 finish. Delaney’s clocking is the second best in Class A behind Billings Central’s Addison Kegel. She also has the Western A’s best time in the 3,200-meter race.
Delaney’s Polson teammate David DiGiallonardo won the 1,600 by twenty seconds, going the distance with a time of 4:19.7.
Whitefish sophomore Ginger Bergland won the 300 hurdles, legging out a time of 45.71 seconds running against the wind in the homestretch. She beat Stevensville sophomore Reagan Johnstone after the two finished with a tie in the 100-meter hurdle race. Both sprinters got through in 15.59 seconds, and to us it looked like Ginger won by a lean.
The best competition of the day was in the men’s 4 X 100-meter relay, where Frenchtown, Corvallis, and Columbia Falls all completed the distance in just under 45 seconds.
The Broncs won the race with a time of 44.11, while the Wildcats were nudged out of second place by eight-hundredths of a second at 44.89. Hamilton and Whitefish both finished a quarter-second later at just under 45.2.
Although we missed the 400-meter races, as we were down the hill working the men’s discus, Whitefish’s Colby Minton ran a personal best time of 49.88 to win the event.
We did get to see Frenchtown’s Henry Griffin win the discus with a toss of 177’2”. He has a personal best heave of 186’2”, set a month ago in Missoula, and is the favorite to win the Western A in both the discus and shot put. Griffin’s teammate, Jacob Kurpius, won the javelin with a career best 159”6” in less than ideal conditions.
Finally, three events were won by Bigfork Vikings, with Austin Savik taking the 110-hurdles, Tamrit Savik in the high jump, and Alex Ochs jumping a personal best 20”10.75” in the long jump.
With just 19 of 34 events completed, the team scores at the ABC meet were not that significant as an indicator of overall success in this weekend's Western A competition. Also noted was that the Western A teams from Dillon, Libby, and Butte Central did not compete in Polson.
Regardless, the Southwest A schools had the best overall showing, with Frenchtown and Bigfork leading the men’s division, while Corvallis and Hamilton earned the most points in the women’s event.
ArtwestimageSports.com staff will be in attendance in Frenchtown today and on Saturday, working the Western A Meet on behalf of the Dillon Tribune and about 20 clients from a variety of schools. Let us know if you want us to watch for your athlete during the meet, via message here on Facebook or on our website.

Last Saturday evening, May 16, the Northwest Avalanche men’s varsity lacrosse team, based in Kalispell, Montana, defeated the Jackson Hole Black’s 5-3 in the Great Western Lacrosse League title game in Pocatello, Idaho.
The two teams advanced through three rounds of competition at the GWLL league tourney, held May 15-16 at Pocatello’s Century High School. Northwest was the top seed in the league’s North Division and was in its first year of league affiliation. Jackson Hole, the top seed from the GWLL’s East Division, was the runner-up in the 2025 tournament, losing to Mt. Spokane last May.
The Av’s defeated Ammon, Idaho, 9-4 in the tournament’s first round, and then Bozeman, 9-6, in the semifinal Friday night. Jackson beat Mt. Spokane 7-6 and Spokane Valley 10-4 on Friday to qualify for the championship game for the fifth straight year.
The championship contest Saturday evening was tied 2-2 at halftime, but the Avalanche seized control in the third quarter to take a 5-3 advantage. The Av’s dropped back into a tight defensive front and held on for the victory against a very strong Black’s offense. No stats were posted for the game.
Several Avalanche players were selected to the All-tournament Team, including attackers Grady Robinson and Caleb Holland, midfielders Weston Robinson and Tucker Roberts, Defenseman Robert McKay, goalkeeper Connor Gall, and faceoff specialist Cruz Grace.
In this post, we bring you our Photographer’s Favorites from our final two games we photographed for Avalanche client families in early May. Featured are the highlights from Northwest’s 7-4 victory over Mount Spokane on Friday, May 1, and an 8-3 non-league win over the Billings Beartooth on Saturday, May 2.
The games began at 6 PM, which meant we got to take advantage of "Golden Hour" light conditions throughout the second half of both contests. For photographers, beginning- and end-of-day captures usually create dramatic effects. Enjoy!

Thursday, May 21, is a big day for Flathead area tennis programs, as the Northwest A and Northern AA divisional meets kick off in Polson and Kalispell.
The Class A meet will be held at Polson’s Linderman Middle School tennis complex, beginning with First Round play at 9 am. The singles and doubles teams for both men’s and women’s divisions from five league schools will attend, including those from Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Libby, Bigfork, and Polson.
Just up the road in Ronan, the Southwestern A Divisional kicks off at the same time, with teams from Ronan, Hamilton, Stevensville, Corvallis, and Beaverhead competing for divisional team trophies and seeds to the state tournament in Hardin, May 28-30.
The latter tourney will be played at Ronan High School, and at press time, neither has released a formal tournament schedule or bracket. We’ll try to get more information as it becomes available.
Also on Thursday, the Northern AA Divisional Tennis Tournament will begin at Flathead Valley Community College, hosted by Glacier High School. Teams from Glacier, Flathead, CMR, and Great Falls High School will compete for divisional trophies and seeds to the state tournament, held at FVCC May 28-29.
ArtwestimageSports.com staff will be in attendance during the first day of the Class AA Divisional event on Thursday. Round One begins at 10:30 AM, with a total of 32 matches in men’s and women’s singles and doubles competition. Round Two is slated to start at 2 PM, with 16 matches scheduled on the 12 FVCC courts. Round Three will begin immediately after that round ends.
Round Four, with two matches in each of the four divisions, will start at 5 PM. On Friday morning, Round 5 begins at 9 AM, and the tourney will continue until its completion around 4 PM. The singles championship matches will start around noon, with the doubles finals starting around 1 PM.
Whitefish will be the prohibitive favorite in both Northern A men’s and women’s divisions. In the Northern AA, CMR and Glacier will likely dominate the competition, with CMR the favorite in the men’s division, and Glacier having a slight edge in the women’s meet.
The defending Class A champion Bulldogs are led by junior singles players Jack Oehlerich and Owen Erickson. Oehlerich and Erickson placed second and fifth, respectively, at the State A tournament in 2026. Aaron Anderson and Marcus Mercer are Whitefish’s top doubles pair, with Cole Moses and Jake Shors competing as the Bulldogs’ #2 team.
Eli Erickson and Ben Nelson will fill the other Whitefish men’s singles events, and Charlie Oehlerich and Finn Hobart will probably get the nod at the #3 doubles spot. Beck Moses, Isaac Rudolph, and Eli Erickson will combine in some combination to be the Bulldogs’ #4 team.
For the Bulldog women, Liesl Brust returns as the top seed in singles, followed by Emy Hanson, Ainsley Grubb, and Sofie Cook. Camry Kelch and Allie Shors are the doubles #1, with Aubrey Talbot and Lucy Marzo pairing as Whitefish #2. Annabelle Barrile and Sammie Shors will likely fill the #3 pairing. The #4 doubles team is Vivian Trieweiler-Schmidt and Daisy Lusko.
In Class AA, the Glacier Wolfpack men and women will be in the running for the top trophy at the Northern Division meet. Neither group has much experience at the state level, with junior Leilani Lennarz placing sixth in the Class AA singles competition in 2026. Lennarz is ranked as the #4 women’s high school singles tennis player in Montana according to the Tennis Recruiting Network.
Glacier #2 Autumn Bashara is undefeated at 14-0 in match play in 2026, after competing in the Class AA state tourney in 2025. Adi Lister and Clara Norick currently fill the #3 and #4 singles spots for the Wolfpack as of this writing.
In women’s doubles, the top tournament pairing has yet to be announced, but it will likely be filled by sisters Cassidy and Cadence Daniels, who are the division's highest-scoring doubles pairing with 49 points, according to Class AA statistical services. The senior duo has a 6-3 record as the #1 team, and a perfect 6-0 record competing against #2 squads. Miley Fritz and Reid Sanders could also get the top-seed nod, going 3-3 against other and 4-0 against #2 teams.
Glacier’s #3 doubles pair is Quinn Berkram and Amelia Bender, who have lost once in 12 contests. The Wolfpack's #4 in Parker Speer and Avery Bender are 9-3 so far in 2026.
In the men’s division, Colton Mantovani is 7-9 as the #1 singles seed, while Weston Heller is 6-11 at #2. Ty Rogers fills in at #3 with a 10-7 mark, and #4 Cole Pelucca is undefeated at 7-0.
