This is a portrait of my grandmother, Evelyn Westwood. And there is a story in that photograph. She has been a constant source of inspiration for me, which is why I chose to include half of her name in mine. My grandfather, Edward Westwood, was her husband and the person I was named after. I struggled with the idea of changing my name because I was honored to have been named after my grandfather. However, when the notion of combining their first names arose, it felt destined - hence why "Edelyn" became my new chosen name. There are many others stories that this portrait brings to mind. This is also one of the last photographs taken before my grandmother's passing in 1997. When photographers talk about story telling, it’s not so much about the story in the photograph, but more so about the stories and memories that reside within our hearts.
This second portrait features Grace, a life long member of my church, Christ Lutheran. As part of creating our new church directory, I had the delightful opportunity to visit her home and capture her photograph. Personally, I find great joy in capturing individuals within the comfort of their own homes as it opens up countless possibilities for storytelling. However, what truly fascinates me is that I have no idea regarding the stories that will be told through this portrait. It is through her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that these stories will endure and be told by her family for years to come.
What stories can I create for you?
