Planning to get married in Tennessee? Here is everything you need to know before the big day.

Getting married in Tennessee is simpler than most states, you can apply for a marriage license anywhere in the state and it is valid statewide regardless of where you live or where you are getting married. Both parties must be 18, bring a valid photo ID, your Social Security card, and if previously married bring the date of your divorce or your spouse's passing. The license is valid for 30 days and once the ceremony is done the officiant must sign and return it to the county clerk within three days. It is best to sort this out about a month before your wedding date.

Did you know that most wedding traditions we still follow today actually started as ways to ward off evil spirits? Here is the history behind some of the most popular ones:

Bridesmaids wore identical dresses to confuse evil spirits and protect the bride. The best man was chosen for being the strongest swordsman to guard the wedding. The bridal bouquet was originally made of garlic and herbs, flowers came much later. The honeymoon began as a way for the groom to hide the bride from her family for an entire month. The wedding ring was placed on the fourth finger because of a belief that a vein ran directly to the heart. And not seeing each other before the ceremony came from arranged marriages where couples were kept apart in case they found each other unattractive. 😄

Your save the date is the very first thing your guests receive and it sets the tone for everything that follows. Send them out six to twelve months ahead for destination weddings and at least four months ahead for local ones so guests can clear their schedules and actually be there. Include the wedding date, city, and both your names and use your engagement photos to make it personal. Avoid sending them too late, going fully digital, or sending them to people you are not completely sure about inviting. Most importantly make it feel like you!

Just got engaged and have no idea where to start? Here are the 8 things you should do first. 💍

1- Talk to your fiancé first, get on the same page about your vision before anyone else gets involved
2- Set your budget early because every single decision after this one flows from it
3- Draft your guest list together including your parents input and keep your venue capacity in mind
4- Decide on a date or season keeping family conflicts and popular booking windows in mind
5- Book your venue as soon as possible because the best ones fill up fast
6- Book your photographer early; good ones get booked out quickly and you want someone whose style you love
7- Book your other vendors including your DJ, caterer, florist, and hair and makeup artist
8- Start wedding dress shopping sooner than you think because alterations and delivery take time

Just said I do, now comes the name change paperwork. 😄Here is the right order to get it all done:
Start with certified copies of your marriage license since everything else depends on it. Then update your Social Security card first as most offices require it before anything else. Head to the DMV for a new driver's license after waiting at least 24 hours. Update your passport next, free if issued less than a year ago, a fee applies if older. Then visit your bank to update all accounts and credit cards.
After those five steps update everything else in any order; employer, insurance, utilities, social media, voter registration and online subscriptions.

Mike and Courtney did not let a pandemic take away their celebration, they just saved it for when everyone could actually be there. Having married the year before in a small intimate ceremony, they came back on August 15 2021 for their second celebration at The Bell Tower in downtown Nashville with friends and family from all over the country. Courtney wore the same dress she had originally planned giving Mike a brand new first look all over again. The reception was full of dancing, heartfelt speeches, a DJ playing 90s and early 2000s hits, and a Whiskey Room that nobody complained about. 😄 Two celebrations, one beautiful love story. So honored to have captured this one.
