Parque (Park), Playa (Beach), and Ermita de Santa Justa, religious hermitage near Ubiarco, Cantabria, Spain.

Ermita de Santa Justa was built in the 16th century in a natural cliff face grotto overlooking a beautiful beach on the Cantabrian coast of northern Spain. Prior to the construction of the current chapel, a hermitage already existed, dating back to the 12th century. Above the chapel on the rocky bluff stands the remains of Torre de San Telmo, an old watchtower.

The local community still uses Ermita de Santa Justa for religious ceremonies and celebrations. Visitors take advantage of the park and beach of this beautiful little cove, and hike the trails over the surrounding bluffs. It's a lovely, peaceful place.

I hauled a lot of camera gear to the north coast of Spain to photograph the August 12th total solar eclipse. At the end of a beautiful sunny day, the clouds rolled in about 30 minutes before first contact of the eclipse. Since I couldn’t photograph the sun, I made a photo essay of the thousands of people who also had turned out to watch the eclipse. View from Mirador Punta del Dichoso (Blissful Point Lookout) across Ensenada de Cabrera (Cabrera Cove) to Punta Ballota (Ballota Point).

ProtecciĂłn Civil Rescate helicopter of the Gobierno de Cantabria (Civil Protection Rescue helicopter of Cantabria Province) made a tour over the coastline before totality.

Working on an image to enter into an art show.

The dome of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City is the tallest dome in the world at 136 meters/446 feet, and I had the privilege to photograph it on the inside.

Valletta is the 2nd smallest country capital in the world based on land area (after the Vatican) and the 7th smallest based on population. The southernmost capital in Europe, Valletta was constructed in the 16th century and named after Jean Parisot de la Valette, a French nobleman who was the Grand Master of the Order of Malta of the Knights Hospitaller who defended the island against the Ottomans during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. It’s a fascinating story of 6000 defenders withstanding 40,000 Ottoman attackers during a siege that lasted almost four months. There are reminders of the Great Siege all around Valletta.

Situated in the Mediterranean between Sicily and Tunisia/Libya, Malta has the warmest average temperatures of any European country and a subtropical Mediterranean climate.

Valletta is a popular tourist destination, and flights arrive at Malta International Airport in Luqa from pretty much every major airport in Europe. There are currently no direct flights to Malta from North America, but in June, Delta will begin sending three flights per week from JFK that will run until late October. Cruise ships often come to Malta, and when I was there, a ship pulled into Grand Harbor and the center of the city quickly became congested with tourists. I was told that in August (the hottest and busiest month), there can be as many as six cruise ships at a time in the harbor. If you’re interested in visiting Malta, I would recommend not going in August, unless you enjoy being in the midst of thousands of hot, sweaty tourists.
