Four days. Thousands of photos. Countless memories.

This week in Ava, Missouri, I had the privilege of serving as the Official Photographer for the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breeders Association Versatility Arena, and what a week it was.

Day One welcomed us with heat, determination, and the unmistakable partnership between horse and rider. Day Two turned up the excitement with speed events that filled the arena with flying dirt, fast runs, and incredible athleticism. Day Three kept that momentum going with another full day of competition, teamwork, and unforgettable moments in the arena. And Day Four? Well, Mother Nature decided she wanted in on the action during calf sorting and absolutely drenched all of us.

For me, this week meant more than just taking photographs. It was a chance to return to my roots and my boots—to spend time around horses, hardworking people, and a community that reminds me why I fell in love with this lifestyle in the first place.

To every rider, trainer, volunteer, official, and family member who made this event possible, thank you for allowing me to capture your stories. It has been an honour to document the dedication, heart, and passion that make the Versatility Arena so special.

Now it’s time to head home, unload thousands of images, and start bringing this incredible week to life.

Good morning from Ava, Missouri!

The horses are saddled, the riders are ready, and the Versatility Arena is already buzzing with anticipation. Another full day of competition, teamwork, and unforgettable moments is about to begin.

If the first two days are any indication, we’re in for an exciting day filled with talented horses, dedicated riders, and plenty of action in the arena.

As the sun set over Ava, Missouri, another great day at the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association came to a close.

From the speed events and competition in the arena to conversations in the stands and beautiful Ozark sunsets like this one, today was a reminder that these shows are about more than ribbons—they’re about community, tradition, and the love of the horse.

Two days down, two to go. Looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings. 🐴🌅📸

Day 2 brought the speed, and the competitors did not disappoint!

The Versatility Arena was full of fast runs, sharp turns, and plenty of flying dirt as horse and rider teams pushed for every second. The athleticism, trust, and determination on display today made for some exciting moments behind the camera.

One of my favorite things about these events is seeing the connection between horse and rider. When everything comes together, it’s something special to watch—and even better to capture.

Two more days to go here in Ava, Missouri, and I have a feeling the best is yet to come. 🐴💨📸

Day One is in the books here in Ava, Missouri!

It was a hot one, but the riders and their horses showed up ready to work. From the first class to the last, it was an honor to capture the dedication, partnership, and heart that make the Missouri Fox Trotting community so special.

For me, this week is a little more than just another event. It’s a chance to go back to my roots and my boots—trading the studio for the arena and spending time around the horses and people who remind me where it all started.

This image means a little more to me than most.

Not because I captured it... but because Billy did.

This was his first time really picking up a camera and stepping into my world. Photography isn't as simple as pointing a camera and pressing a button. There is light, composition, timing, exposure, focus, and a hundred little details that all have to come together in a single moment.

Over the 8 days in Tuscany, he listened, learned, asked questions, and soaked up every bit of information he could from the incredible photographers around us. Then he put it into practice and created this stunning image.

Behind the scenes at Meeko Photography, it has been a whirlwind month.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been blessed to photograph beautiful family sessions, spend time learning at the Texas School of Photography, create images during an incredible trip through Italy, and now I’m preparing to serve as the Official Photographer for the Missouri Foxtrotting Horse Association Versatility Arena. Somewhere in between all of that, we’re still making progress on the studio and bringing that vision to life.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that owning a camera doesn’t make someone a photographer. Photography is a craft that requires a commitment to continuous learning. The moment you think you’ve mastered it is the moment you stop growing.

Great photography isn’t just about pressing a shutter button. It’s understanding light, mastering composition, learning posing, developing people skills, studying color theory, refining editing techniques, managing business operations, and constantly adapting to new technology. Every image is the result of countless hours spent learning, practicing, making mistakes, and improving.

That’s why I continue to invest in education, attend workshops, travel to learn from other artists, and challenge myself to grow. Whether I’m photographing a family, a horse and rider, a senior, or creating fine art portraits, my goal is always the same—to deliver the very best experience and images I can.
