Bold remarks.

If you take the time to observe and think about the world, you realize how amazing it actually is. Something as simple, yet intricate as the plumage of a bird is awesome to witness. Most birds have very distinct and unique patterns and colors, some have very striking features that gain more attention than others. The female downy woodpecker is adorned with a black and white set of feathers which make her a timeless classic in the bird world.

Get a grip.

Nature is life, life is nature. We are all part of this rotating ball and everything matters, big and small. Our ecosystems only thrive when all creatures can survive and contribute. Caught a chipmunk clutching a highly sought after peanut recently in the backyard.

Mourning light.

To the naked eye, mourning doves appear to be very dull looking birds. They are abundant in both backyards and in cities. All birds are beautiful and unique in their own right, and if the light hits just so, the plumage of this dove shows off gorgeous pastel hues and iridescence. We all shine differently, it’s finding the light that helps us.

Gold filled.

Caught this American goldfinch recently on a platform feeder munching away on some seed. Certain feeders work better for different bird species, platforms are a fan favorite for many.

Hand squeezed.

Now that the orioles have come back, fresh oranges get added to the outdoor menu. Clearly they aren’t the only ones who enjoy a little citrus in their diet. A red squirrel got its daily dose of vitamin C recently.

Said a mouthful.

Hearing the Baltimore orioles is a good sign of the change of season. I actually had a male that visited a few times over the winter, but our resident male is back and his family will follow soon. You can’t mistake their ratchet like sound, I sat patiently with my camera and listened as this guy tentatively descended to get some jelly this morning. They are skittish birds, and since I don’t use blinds, waiting and listening quietly are key to capturing shots of them in the yard. Here’s my first of the season!

Current state.

Transitions can be hard, they seem slow and daunting at times. Contrarily some happen in the blink of an eye. Right now seasonally speaking we’re waiting for a little more warmth and the trees to turn green. This black-capped chickadee perched for me in front of a brown background of the tree line that hasn’t changed yet.

Small consolation.

I have only seen one hummingbird pass through, my male(s) haven’t shown yet, should be any day now. While I wait, this very small bird has returned for the warm weather months. Chipping sparrows are tiny and cute visitors, plenty of them make their home here for the spring and summer months.
