when I was 13, my dad passed away from an alcohol related death, after many, many years of being angrier at him than I’ll ever be at anyone. he was 44. it was kind of like driving down a gravel road going 100 and slamming your breaks to try and avoid a collision. it was both the end of many years of turmoil and the catalyst that changed the remainder of my life and I’m telling you this because it’s the tallest peak in a mountain range of things that have made me who I am, and ultimately, how I see and experience the world.

this time of year, i like to tell this story for two reasons: 1. it’s mental health awareness month and i feel it’s important to talk about, and ironically, also the month of the anniversary and 2. because it’s the why behind what i do, who i do it for, and how i make the work that i do. it feels both incessantly weird to draw attention to and completely unfair to ignore without saying anything. he died on the 10th and we buried him on Mother’s Day (coincidentally which falls as one in the same this year), and his birthday is the 16th, and this week i prioritize taking care of myself and also honor his memory. i go for walks and listen to polish highlander music and 90s country and spend time with people i love and go fishing and spend time in the mountains (because i know he’d be so proud i made it here).

my tata. the coolest mother fu**er I’ll ever know. i used to grieve the dad i missed out on, the family we could have had, the life i felt jealous of when i looked at my peers. nowadays i grieve everything he missed out on. I’ve become a whole adult he’ll never know, and the closer I get to the age he was when he died, that hole seems to get a little bigger in different ways.

all of MY favorite photos are on film. so when you invite me into your family, just for the weekend just know—to me, this is sacred. there’s a duality I feel deep down: how I envy your teary eyed hugs from inside my broken family and yet this grief gives me the gravity I need to hold these memories for you with the emotional weight they deserve. for me, it’s all about heart. and if you’re here, I’m hoping it is for you, too.

brooke + garrett rompin around the colorado mountains. when they first reached out to me, brooke didn’t even fill out my stupid form lol, she emailed me directly and said they were drawn to the raw emotion of my work. I knew it was going to be a great fit immediately.

the weekend they planned was surrounded by mountains and family and beer and friends and lots and lots of fur baby snuggles. they’re truly two of the most kind hearted folks, and I’m so honored to have been here beside you. thank you thank you thank you, and lots of love forever xoxo
