Fun Fact. There was a period when I photographed 4 straight New Year’s Eve weddings and they all ended in annulment. LOL LOL But in 2011, that streak ended. And I’m telling you, it was as beautiful a day as Michigan weather has even given us. I photographed a LOT of winter weddings but I was never outside as much as I was on this day. No snow, no wind, 40 degrees and I had a beautiful bride & groom and wedding party. I have not been booked for a New Year’s Eve wedding since. (not that that’s a good thing but it’s not a bad thing either LOL)

Was talking with some peeps about favorite historical venues in Detroit to photograph weddings in. I think the Colony Club may have my vote. Georgian exterior, marble floors, spiral stairway, bronze accents within the artwork, and high arches. There are just plenty of things to use for both background and foreground. What I hate is when photographers shoot at venues like this and they photograph everything tight. Part of the fun and shooting at venues like this is incorporating the interior details. .

I rarely spend any significant amount of time going through old photo jobs (mainly because all I see are things I could have done better). But this is a wedding from 2009 which was 15 years ago, 4 cameras ago, and 200 weddings ago.

Now the camera I shot this with (Nikon D300) resales for less than $100 in today’s market. But that’s the thing -the camera never matters more than the person using the camera. If you know what you’re doing and you’re passionate about it than you’ll get it done.

Anyways this is a good one. And I definitely still know what I’m doing and I’ll always have the passion.

The holiday season will always be the most popular time to take family portraits. Kids come home from college and relatives come to visit from out of town.

Since 2007 I’ve done a large portion of my holiday photo sessions at the homes of my clients. It’s always nice to have family portraits in your home, in front of your home, and surrounded by your holiday decor. It also works out great for families that have an older family member that doesn’t get around as well as they don’t have to leave out. Here are some of my favorites over the years.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been photographing high school seniors for almost 2 decades. Whether in a rented studio, my basement studio, or outside; the goal is always for the photographs to represent the best version of who they are.
