“Ethical behavior is doing the right thing when no one else is watching—even when doing the wrong thing is legal.”

Suffolk County Deer Management (SCDM) applauds the NYSDEC’s adoption of regulations designed to increase antlerless deer harvest opportunities across New York.

Since 2013, SCDM has promoted the principle that effective deer management requires management-minded hunters focused on reducing deer populations through strategic antlerless harvest. These new regulations recognize the important role hunters play in managing wildlife populations and reducing deer-related impacts on communities.

This is a positive step forward for science-based deer management in New York.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Amanda Lefton announced several changes to deer hunting regulations to increase harvest of antlerless (primarily female) deer and improve DEC’s ability to manage abundant deer populations.

Professor Gobler’s warning about flesh eating bacteria was not mis-quoted or overblown. His statement about flesh eating bacteria and its effects was a clear warning that many media outlets and politicians, once again, portrayed as a “nothing burger”. Pay attention to where information comes from and try to filter out the garbage to protect yourself and family.

Southampton Town Councilwoman Cyndi McNamara should immediately step down from her position. Her ongoing and well-documented conflicts of interest, pattern of coercive and unprofessional conduct, involvement in historical designations impacting family-owned properties, and the public conduct of her immediate household—specifically the reckless and inflammatory social media activity of her spouse—collectively expose the Town to significant legal and reputational risk.

Furthermore, the actions of a Marine Patrol Officer, along with individuals who interfered with the Southampton Town Trustees’ authorized cleanup operations on Trustee-owned bottomlands, warrant immediate and thorough investigation by the Town. Any individuals who removed bird carcasses from Long Pond in direct contravention of an active contract and Trustee oversight should face appropriate administrative penalties. This includes, but is not limited to, the indefinite revocation of duck blind privileges. Any individuals operating under commercial licenses should also be subject to formal review, including verification of residency and compliance with applicable regulations.

Southampton Town now has an obligation—and an opportunity—to correct these failures through transparency, accountability, and adherence to proper governance.

Suffolk County Deer Management stands firmly in support of a full and impartial review of these matters.

Wow, if the public is this upset about how East Hampton Town Trustees handled the cleanup of suspected avian flu bird carcasses, just wait until they hear about the illegal collection and disposal of over 275 birds in Long Pond.

FYI SCDM did submit a proposal to the East Hampton Town Trustees offering our services prior to the event.

A town trustee angrily defended his actions in the disposal of hundreds of geese killed by bird flu, dismissing “social media comments” by “nobody that’s actually there” and singling out a former trustee who no longer lives here.
