Today, I mourn the loss of my dear friend, . Wakamiya-san was not only a master of Wajima-nuri (urushi) lacquerware but one of the finest artists to ever work with this craft. I first met him in 2008 while filming a documentary in Japan. He welcomed me with open arms, showing me around Wajima, introducing me to his workshops, and even sharing the secret behind his lacquer trees and his unique techniques. Since then, we’ve kept in touch, meeting up whenever he visited the US.
His artistry was unmatched. He was one of the few who produced his own lacquer, and his dedication to the intricate world of Maki-e was unparalleled—some of his pieces took years to complete. His passing is a tremendous loss, but his legacy and the beauty of his work will endure forever.
In the near future, I plan to share the footage I captured of him and his craft with the world. Rest in peace, my friend. You will always be remembered.
