Waiting For Momma

We watched this young mountain goat climb down off the mountain with a sibling both on high alert looking for their momma. It was such a sweet reunion once the family unit linked back up together that resulted in lots of joyful sounds and frolicking in the meadow.

One of our favorite parts of Glacier National Park is the plethora of wildlife that the park has to offer. Wherever you are, there is something to see, but just be on alert as not all the wildlife is as sweet and playful as this young kid.

Hidden Lake

Glacier National Park’s Hidden Lake nearly lived up to its namesake when we visited. Cloaked by smoke from the 2021 Dixie and Bootleg Fires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres of California and Oregon landscapes, the lake teamed with Grizzly activity as they feasted on cutthroat trout spawning in the shallow waters of the lake’s edge, while the meadows leading up to the lake view were littered with sightings of mountain goats and rams.

Somewhere Out There

While some animals like bears, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats may be more elusive to find in Glacier National Park, one friendly critter that you can almost always count on having an experience with is the Hoary Marmot.

Nicknamed a “whistle pig,” this critter is one of the most friendly and playful animals in the park. Sometimes they will even pose for you like a model in a photo shoot, like this one found atop Logan Pass that went out of its way to ensure that it landed a few keepers on my memory card.

This particular photo of a marmot posing on a rock gives the appearance of it sitting up on a high place, surveying the vast landscape, looking for the spot somewhere out in the distance that will be its eventual next destination.

Bird Woman Falls

Carved by Glaciers thousands of years ago, Bird Woman Falls is a snow melt fed waterfall that cascades nearly 640 feet into the valley below. Located between Mount Oberlin and Mount Cannon along Glacier National Park’s Going to the Sun Road, this breathtaking waterfall is easily enjoyed from the pullouts along the road’s edge.

Walk On The Beach

The young moose calf enjoying the last few rays of golden light as it explores the shoreline of Glacier National Park’s beautiful Fishercap Lake under the watchful eye of its momma standing just a few feet out of frame.

Reunited

Cow and her calf are reunited on the shores of Fishercap Lake in the Many Glacier region of Glacier National Park. This young moose surprised us as it popped out of the surrounding trees and brush after we had been watching momma eat her aquatic plant dinner in the middle of the lake. After a quick greeting, the young calf seemed to relax in the safety of its mother’s presence as momma kept watch over her little one as she explored the lake shore.

The Stare Down

A moose cow taking a quick pause to assess the growing crowd of observers between bites of the lush aquatic plant life of Fishercap Lake in beautiful Glacier National Park. Much to our surprise, her calf emerged from the surrounding trees moments later to be greeted by a sweet nose kiss from momma to say hello.

Sacred Dancing Cascade

Sacred Dancing Cascade is one of Glacier National Park’s most visited waterfalls because of its ease of access from the park’s famous Going To The Sun Road. This waterfall requires no hiking and offers a variety of viewpoints from the boardwalk, bridge, and rocks surrounding the falls.

Mountain Momma

This beautiful momma (also known as a nanny goat) kept watch over her two kids as they playfully explored the meadow that surrounds Glacier National Park’s Hidden Lake trail. Her sweet face looked so proud to show us her kiddos in the quiet moment that we had with them until a crowd of people arrived and ushered them on their way.

Avalanche Cascade

This unnamed cascade sits at the junction of the Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake trailhead in Glacier National Park. While this short waterfall may not be one of the park’s most anticipated destinations, it is worth a visit to admire the sounds of the beautiful turquoise color water rushing through the glacial gorge as it sweeps away the ground up bits of rock and sediment known as ‘glacial flour’ that gives the water its iconic color.

Welcoming Party

Much to our surprise, this grizzly bear decided to be the welcoming party for our group of passengers disembarking from the St. Mary Lake boat tour in Glacier National Park.

Thankfully it had its mind set on just passing through the area and not discovering what fresh catch the boat was bringing back from its latest voyage on the lake.

Wild Goose Sunset

A stunning sunset over Wild Goose Island and St. Mary Lake in beautiful Glacier National Park. This evening was one of the only reprieves of smoke from the 2021 Dixie and Bootleg Fires burning hundreds of thousands of acres of California and Oregon landscapes during our week of exploring the park.
