sharing the story of the first trail photo I ever shared here! •

This 2016 hike in Mt. Rainier National Park is one I won’t forget, for a lot of reasons! With big aspirations, we set out on a rocky and unmaintained trail ironically marked by small red flags, next to a quick and roaring river. See where this is going? It should be no surprise that we soon lost those small red flags and wound up on the opposite side of the roaring river, thanks to a fallen tree. It took a few minutes of shouting over the river to some hikers for us to realize our mistake, assess our situation, decide that the trail we’d set out to follow was too sketchy and turn around. When we made it back to the trailhead without service, our ride had assumed we made it safely on our way and almost didn’t show for our last scheduled emergency check-in/pick up! I can’t wait for the day that it’s safe to travel and explore wild places like this again.
