Taking a trip to the town where Northern Exposure was filmed has been something on my list for a while. So when I saw my flights home had a 24 hour layover in Seattle I decided to rent a truck and make the drive out to Rosalyn Washington. The drive itself was beautiful, through snowcapped mountains and national forests, along massive lakes and rivers. Rosalyn still looks like it did in 1990, and was definitely a fitting stand in for Alaska. Everyone was nice and I talked to a few people who live there, they were all happy to tell me about the area. I ate lunch at The Brick and walked around town, bought some Northern Exposure souvenirs, and took some photos. It was a great way to end my trip. Also, it’s not the only show that has been filmed here. Some of Twin Peaks and The Man in the High Castle were shot here as well.

I was in a hurry trying to catch a train so I could photograph some monitor lizards in Lumpini Park and I was running late. Train station was crazy packed, line for tickets was insane, I was annoyed. I thought I was going to get there in the dark and not see anything. I got off the train, didn’t wait for the escalator, sprinted up the stairs and burst out into the sunlight. I saw everyone facing away from the park, I almost asked someone what they were photographing until I turned and saw this. If I had been on time and got there early, I would’ve walked into the park and missed this completely. It was an excellent example of something that I forget sometimes, especially as a photographer. Yeah, I want to get the shots I planned and I can always make time for that but a lot of the best photos I’ve taken have been nothing more than lucky timing and happy accidents. I’ve been doing my best to not rush around and be in a hurry. It’s hard. I’m impatient sometimes. Sometimes I’m so annoyed with slow walkers I cross the street for a few feet and then cross back over. I have to remind myself that it’s really important to slow down and just be where you are and take whatever comes with it. Even if it means changing your plans and expectations. I still had time to photograph the lizards even after watching the sun move from behind one building to the other. Enjoy the time you have wherever you are, you’ll never get those moments back.

Sometimes it’s nice to just watch and be in the moment. I’ve found myself, and this happens on a lot of trips for me, I just start taking my camera out only for specific shots. These are all phone photos, some yes, I have alternate versions on my camera, but, it’s not always necessary. If I’m with a friend or just doing something that is important to me, I don’t always need the camera.
