What you don’t see in the finished photograph is usually most of the work.

The horse that needed another minute to settle. The foot that needed to move six inches. The ears that finally came forward. The tiny change in angle that cleaned up the background. Waiting for the neck to come into exactly the right place.

Then — click.

The finished photograph should look effortless.

It rarely is.

Photography doesn’t sell a good horse by itself.

But when buyers are scrolling through hundreds of horses, the photograph is often responsible for getting them to stop long enough to look at one.

That is the job.

Represent the horse accurately. Show him at his best. Remove distractions. Make the image strong enough to earn the next few seconds of someone’s attention.

Then let the horse do the rest.

Sometimes you need a little horse time without actually going to the barn.

A photograph used to market a horse has a job to do.

It needs to attract attention, certainly, but it also needs to accurately represent the horse, reproduce well across different uses, give designers room to work when necessary, and fit the market where that horse is being presented.

Most people come into a portrait session thinking about photographs of their horse.

What we are actually creating is a record of this particular horse, with this particular person, at this particular point in their lives together.

Five years from now the photograph will mean something different.

Ten years from now, different again.

That is one of the reasons I’ve never believed portrait photography should simply be about getting everyone to look at the camera.

I’m also booking private sale horse sessions throughout the Weatherford area for horses being marketed privately or through online sales.

Sale sessions can include traditional conformation photographs, additional marketing images, horizontal video and short-form video/reel content depending on what you need for the horse and where it will be marketed.

I photograph hundreds of sale horses each year, and the goal is never to simply make a horse “look pretty.” Good sale photography needs to present the horse accurately, professionally and competitively while giving buyers the information they need to take a closer look.

If you have horses headed to a fall sale, now is the time to get them on the calendar.

Not every photograph has to show the whole horse.

Sometimes the photograph is in the curve of a neck, the texture of a mane, an eye catching the light, or one tiny detail that would be completely ordinary if you weren’t paying attention.

Those are often the photographs that become favorites.
