A sequence of dance photos from the archives, where I collaborated with Anna Russel aka PoppySeedDancer. Anna is incredibly athletic in her explosive movements. Amazing experience to work with her.

Techie details:
Nikon D5
Nikon @4-70mm f/2.8 AF-S VR

Lighting is with the Nikon SN-900 in the 24” collapsible Lastolite softbox.

1/800 @ f/4 @ 800 ISO

To freeze movement, I was in high-speed flash with the 1/800 shutter speed. Since HSS reduces@flash output by 1-2 stops, and with the softbox attached, the flash output was reduced a lot to the point where it was just enough of a fill-flash. Scroll through the images to get to the last two photos which are the test shots with which I confirmed that I was still getting useful fill-flash at those camera settings.

Maui has been rumbustious all yesterday morning because he hadn’t been outside since the snow storm here in New Jersey — so in the afternoon I squeezed the back door open a bit, and I let him out onto the back porch.

I hate it when I watch videos and there’s stupid giggling noises as people laugh about what’s happening — well, I had incredible self-control not laughing at my poor cat negotiating his way over 12” of snow!

This time we have Justin in my studio for a headshot of the cover of his book that’s about to be published. The brief here was to make the portrait with lighting that is somewhat dramatic … and this meant we could play a bit with studio lighting.

When taking headshots / portraits in the studio, I always shoot tethered on the computer so we can immediately see the results and adjust what we need to the lighting, posing or clothes.

I wanted to use some of the patterns on this backdrop as an out-of-focus element behind Justin. I therefore shot at f/2.8

Now, about the lighting — I changed my lighting slightly from my regular setup (with the large 5-ft octa as the main light) … instead I opted for the gridded Profoto 1x6 Profoto stripbox as the main light.

The gridded 1x4 to camera left was to add a bit of rim lighting to help separate him from the dark background. The gridded 1x4 was angled to skim the backdrop, to light it up a little bit.

More dance photography in the studio. In the frame, Madeline. This is one of 3 different setups we dis during this photo session — all of them with continuous lighting.

Since I decided on using continuous light, the poses had to be static, with no movement in them.

Two Amaran 300c lights with Profoto adapters, so that I can fit any of my Profoto light modifiers on them. (Instead of having to use Bowens mount light modifiers.

The big boom arm was essential in getting that big spread of light on her and the paper background. Then the spotlight effect was with an Aputure spotlight.

There is a short BTS video that Madeline sent me, that will show how the lights were set up.

Combining elements of dance, gymnastics and ballet, these young gymnasts at the year-end show of showed just how hard they had worked for these flawless performances on the floor. These are just 10 of my favorite shots.

In terms of the photography — it was a challenge keeping up with their fast movements and predicting the peak of their movements! I have to admit that lot of the framing was finessed in cropping these images in post!

Camera: Sony A9ii
Lens: Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 GMii
Lighting: two Profoto D1 flashes bounced into the ceiling of this massive warehouse type venue. That was another challenge (not always successful) in timing my shots so that the flashes had time to recycle.

I think next time, A Sony A9iii with a much higher flash sync speed will solve some problems for me.

That said, I really do like the results here, and I hope I did these hard-working girls justice in showing them at their best.

I finally have permission from the client to post this.

The photos are of a comedic duo named Ganbareruya, who apparantly is (and I quote) super-famous in Japan. We even had Japanese tourists on the street recognize them.

Their management team (?) found me via Instagram, and was drawn to use me because of the dance photography I regularly posted on Instagram.

The premise was this comedic team, Ganbareruya, would be visiting New York, and meet up with a famous dance photographer (moi?!) who would show them dance moves (again, me, of all people!), and they would try to copy me.

Now if you have ever seen Japanese television — the humor is quite surreal. Actually, very surreal.

So these two women would hilariously copy my dance instructions, and I would photograph them ... while they purposely misinterpret my instructions ... and their team of 5 videographers would do video of this debacle. This would be shown on Japanese TV eventually.

(I asked for a link of some kind but never got a reply about that. I am dying to see the results.)

This was a wild event. At some points I was literally shaking with laughter while taking the photos.

What I found interesting in a way, is that despite the craziness of this photo shoot, the photos are somehow still recognizably my style when you look at the use of off-camera lighting (via of course), and looking at the composition and framing.

Anyway, here’s to the crazy ones amongst us. Good to have met you!
