Sometimes I question my sanity and my choices. I recently photographed sunrise at the Portland Head Light and was challenged in many ways that morning! First, I'm driving at night, which challenges my vision, in order to get there before sunrise. The GPS keeps telling me to turn left, but I don't see a road to turn left on! I drove past the small driveway-like road 3 times before I found it. Then I get to the lighthouse, put on my head lamp, and trudge along on an unshoveled path. I probably looked like a drunk person walking home at bar time! When I find my first spot to take pictures from, I fight setting up my damn tripod. It won because I discovered the piece that connects the camera to the tripod was missing. (I hate this tripod.) Now I'm freaking out because the eastern horizon is starting to lighten up. I toss the tripod on the ground. turn away, and stumble thru even deeper snow to get to a metal fence that I can rest my camera on. The sun is just starting to rise and the best time to take photos is here, but I'm so cold my right hand thumb won't work and the brisk wind is picking up, making my warm cape unfurl like an flag. But I am determined to take photos of this lighthouse at sunrise. Who needs a thumb to work their camera anyway? Despite the elements, I was able to capture some really nice photos. Here's one of my favorites. I hope you like it, too.
