An Artists Apology.

I am a photographer. I started this journey professionally 4 years ago. I thrust myself into the industry at the same time I was learning what the buttons on my borrowed camera did.

It was beautiful, the crazy belief I could do something before I had any sort of proof of it. I don’t regret it. However…

Throwing yourself into an art form and then using that art form to pay bills gets you a certain mindset if you’re not careful:

“Do better. Book more. Be successful.”

Now, I’m all for the hard work and a good hustle. But my art and my business started from a place of belief that quickly turned into fear and comparison.

In the name of learning “how to be successful” I studied others, plucked and curated, pulled my hair out trying to be them with little success.

I’ve had moments of bravery where I’ve stepped into arenas that truly aligned with who I think God created me to be. But the driving motive has been, “Book more… prove more… try and keep up with the mess you’ve made.”

So here it is. An Artists Apology:

I’m sorry for putting a price tag on the art I create before remembering who I am. I’m sorry for letting my work come out of a place of fear rather than a place of complete and utter understanding of love and freedom in Christ.

I’m ready to take steps to become the artist I’m meant to be.

Photography has been my full time job and artistry second. I’m ready to change that.

Over the next 6 months I’m going to be doing a series of challenges to become the artist I know I’m capable of being.

If you’re a past client of mine, I cannot thank you enough. I felt every second of working with you and your story is what inspired me to do this. To future clients of mine, I’ve been working hard to do justice to the artistry of your story.

Now to you who’s reading this, I need your help. I need people passionate about artistry in their own lives who are willing to collaborate on some creative shoots. I’m talking beautiful, creative freedom to explore different states, countries, all while telling a story.

I’m currently reminiscing on my time in Alaska with these cuties as I’m on my flight home from Oregon.

I have so much to share about this elopement day with Courtney and Tristen, about spending the morning in the coziest cabin before a day out on Kenia Fjords National Park and all the adventures that unfolded.
