I feel compelled to remind Americans what is happening to the people of Ukraine at the hands of Putin. During my two trips over two years covering this war I have seen bombed schools, hospitals and residential zones. I've met children injured from Russian shelling trying to survive in the basement of bombed out hospitals. I've met hundreds of people who fled their homes and are still living as refugees around Europe.

I'm at a loss trying to understand the new posturing by the Trump administration towards Ukraine. Who does this benefit and why are we aligning with Russia?

For anyone who is on the fence in regards to Russia's intentions or who started this war, please feel free to read my account of what this war looks like.

CHERNIHIV, Ukraine — The sign on the road leading into this war-battered city says "Welcome to Hell" and inside a bombed-out hospital, we begin to see the horror of Russia’s attacks. A boy injured by...

Journalism has reached a critical point. During my 17 years working in this industry I have never received a raise or even a bonus. I have succeeded in every way earning New England Region Photographer of the Year for six straight years from 2018 to 2023 in the National Press Photographers NPPA - National Press Photographers Association as well as a Finalist for Community Photographer of the Year in the Best of Photojournalism competition twice and Finalist for Local Photographer of the Year once by Pictures of the Year International. During that time my yearly income never exceeded $45k even while working freelance projects around the world during my accrued vacation time. I went nearly 5 years working straight with no vacation while simultaneously unable to save any money. Journalists do not make money. It’s that simple.
It’s not the most uplifting feeling having to reach out to the public to obtain funding to work on reporting projects in dangerous areas that will no doubt benefit people and their understanding of the world and the issues that plague us now. At this point in time journalism is largely a hobby for the affluent. We are losing socioecomic diversity in our reporting to people who can afford to do this work because money is not a factor in their world. Money is a factor in my life. And probably always will be. But that doesn’t mean I can’t provide something meaningful to humanity.

Every little bit helps.

Over the course of several months, Morning Sentinel photographer Michael G. Seamans captured images of people living at a homeless encampment along the Kennebec River, and came to learn his assumptions about them were wrong.

It is an honor and privilege to be recognized by my peers and the NPPA for another year of work in the New England region. The NPPA has been a guiding light for me as I navigate my career in this difficult but rewarding industry. I applaud all those who participated in this contest and who continue to do impactful work for their readership and communities. Thank you for your support NPPA community.

Congratulations to the 2021 Monthly News Clip Contest winners! We thank everyone who participated for their patience. We want to acknowledge and express appreciation for the volunteers who do the heavy lifting that goes into all of the NPPA contests.

Felt amazing to be back in Maine and New Hampshire this weekend. Big thanks for Maine International Film Festival for a beautiful night by the river and Marty's Driving Range for an unforgettable time. Can’t wait to come back!
