Deep in the heart of Dark Oak Forest trees are twisted and contorted. They form an eerie canopy covering a world carpeted in soft emerald moss. Few venture into this realm steeped in legends of beasts and mythical creatures. Travel is difficult and food is scarce, but a few hardy souls call this place home. Ruling over them is Frostbeard, a tiny gnome who wields great power. He has earned the respect of all creatures by ruling wisely and fairly, using his magical staff to help any soul in need and to fend off any unwanted intruders.

Artist's Note: I photographed this tiny gnome in a place called The Dark Hedges while on my recent trip to Northern Ireland. This spot is famous for being a location where they filmed a scene in Game of Thrones. It is about an hour north of Belfast. I arrived just as the sun came up hoping to capture this famous road in early morning light (without any acorns in the scene). Unfortunately, it was a very cloudy and overcast morning. While waiting for a break in the clouds, I broke out the acorns and shot two scenes. I did not want to paved road in the scene, so I used a moss covered log as foreground. I hope to post a "Behind the Scenes" video from this location.

Meet Terra Roama, a true world traveler. She hops from hostel to hostel with nothing but a vintage duffel bag and a pocket full of train tickets. No plans for tomorrow, thank you very much. She's too busy living for today. Scones and clotted cream in a little London cafe. Tomorrow? Perhaps a flaky croissant in Paris, or a warm apple strudel tucked away in Austria. She moves like a feather floating in the wind. No direct path, no plans, guided by the direction of the wind.

Today is the day to wiggle your toes in the sun-kissed sand and maybe take a dip in the ocean. Afterall, it's National Beach Day! Youngsters will be busy with turrets and moats, building sandcastles fit for a king crab. The bookish folk need only three things: a beach towel, a dab of sunscreen, and a novel with slightly sandy pages. The adventurous ones? They'll be off chasing waves to surf and snorkel. But not Wade and Sandy. They enjoy a casual stroll just above the gently rolling surf, always on the lookout for seashells and sand dollars. What is your favorite beach to relax at?

Artist's Note: I captured this image this past April on Trunk Beach on St. John Island in the US Virgin Island (Yes - I still haven't shared all of the acorn's adventures from that trip!) We visited this amazing beach every night for sunset - it turned out to be our favorite.

Did you know today is National Sports Day? It's not about keeping score — it's about getting off the sofa, wiggling your toes, and trying something delightfully new. On his recent wander to London, little Hawthorn Bowler did just that. He swapped his trusty third-baseman's glove for something entirely new — Cricket! New country, new bat, new rules — England's beloved national sport is nothing like baseball back home. It was all topsy-turvy at first. He was put into the line-up as a tailender and his first go was a proper golden duck. But by tea time, young Hawthorn was swinging, grinning, and finally getting the hang of it.

Artist's Note: I captured this image near Buckingham Palace. It was actually a customer who gave me the idea for this scene. I always tell customers the acorns have played every sport (at least, every Olympic sport, that is). One lady asked if they played cricket. Sadly, they had not - but this was right before our trip to England, so I built a cricket bat, shin guards, and a wicket - and this is the final result. Do you have any suggestions for non-Olympic sports the acorns should try?

"To be, or not to be: that is the question."
Kirt N. Puller has landed his dream role: Hamlet! This is a big step up from his last performance as "Lone Maple Tree" in his hometown's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. This young thespian has big goals. He dreams of being cast as the lead role in every Shakespeare play. In the spirit of theatre tradition, let's encourage him by saying, "Snap a leg!"

Artist's Note: I captured this image during our visit to London at the Globe Theatre. We took a fascinating tour of this reproduction of the original Globe Theatre which burned down in 1613. Our tour guide - Gerard - was absolutely amazing. So funny and full of interesting history. Before our trip, I looked at pictures of the theater and read reviews of the tours. I knew we would most likely be sitting in the audience and saw there was a nice railing where my Acorn Hamlet could comfortably perch. The props were fairly simple for this shot: a neck ruffle, a brimmed hat, and the skull which was repurposed from my Dia de Los Mu***os scene. I used a bit of clay on his feet to make sure he stayed balanced and didn't fall over the side. Do you have a favorite play the acorns should be performing in?

Today is World Rock Paper Scissors Day! Of course, the acorn folk don't celebrate. It's pretty hard to play when you have no hands! But as this picture proves - they don't lose any sleep over it. They did come up with their own unique version: Stick, Branch, Twig. Stick beats branch, branch beats twig, and twig beats stick.

Three cheers for today's whacky holiday - National Toilet Paper Day! King Filbert, famous for defeating the squirrels at the battle of Walnut Ridge, is incredibly thankful for this simple invention. While taking care of business outside of Nuttingham Palace (indoor plumbing is currently under construction), King Filbert reflects on the good old days when clean-up options included corn cobs, JC Fenny catalog pages, and leaves. His backside occasionally flares up with mild itching after he misidentified poison oak leaves as a child.
