Birch Trekmaster has been on the trail for days. The sound of falling water is joy to his ears. His canteen is empty. Taking a much needed rest, Birch settles on a rock near a deep pool and drinks deeply, filling his body like a sponge. Birds sing tales from low hanging branches. Fish dart in the pool, dappled sunlight flashing off their scales. Birch soaks in the scene, regaining his strength. Tomorrow will be another long day on the trail but sure to be filled with wonderous surprises.

"The Thinker"
Ok, today I want to hear your best comments/short stories about this scene. I photographed this a few summers ago in Glacier National Park. And...... go!

Dive into World Oceans Day! Grab that snorkel and mask. Try walking the beach in those awkward fins. Then hit the water and glide weightlessly through tropical waters in search of colorful fish, slithering eels, and maybe a shark or two. If you're really lucky, you may encounter an acorn manatee. These gentle giants, affectionately known by locals as sea potatoes, are curious creatures. They may venture close, wondering what strange fish is swimming in their neck of the ocean.

Artist's Note: I built this manatee while on a trip to Florida after photographing several real manatees. I never had the opportunity to photograph it underwater until this past spring while vacationing in the US Virgin Islands. This photo was taken on Cinnamon Beach.

A wilderness adventure awaits Huck L. Beary on this National Boone Day. With his trusty double barrel boom-stick, Huck trapses over soft moss like mist on a gravestone. His quest this fine morning? To find the elusive Acorn Elk. Backwoods settlers regale about the size of this rare beast's antlers; rumored to be so large they brush low hanging clouds. No sign of any large beasts, but not to worry. The adventure lies in exploring untouched corners of the forest, much like the larger than life legend, Daniel Boone.

Rocky Flowstone is on a subterranean odyssey for National Caves and Karst Day. With a headlamp to guide his fearless sense of direction, Rocky is hoping to find new passageways and rooms in this sunken playground. What mysteries of the deep will he discover? Undoubtedly, many stalactites and stalagmites will greet him on this journey, as well as the occasional bat with an encouraging upside down smile.

Artist's Note: I captured this image while on a tour of Cave Wind National Park. I learned that, as a photographer, it helped to volunteer to be the "caboose" of the group. Being the last one to leave each room gave me extra time to take photos.

Duncan Cruller introduces his son to National Donut Day! For breakfast they'll feast on Pink Glazed Yeast Donuts. Lunch? Bavarian Creme covered in a blizzard of confectioners sugar. And dinner will be apple fritters large enough to be used as frisbees. In between meals they will snack on donut holes, jelly filled, bear claws, and many more. It will be a rollercoaster ride of sugar highs on this gloriously sweet day. Maybe tomorrow should be National Stomachache Day? What is your favorite kind?

Phil O'Dendron, horticulturist for the Royal Acorn Gardens, knows the way to win over a girl's heart is with flowers. For years, he has been perfecting a special bloom for the apple of his eye. What girl couldn't resist a Bleeding Heart blossom? The flower may only last a day, but their love will continue to grow for a lifetime.

Still planning for my trip to Newfoundland. Today… building a moose! This took several hours over two days. Now to find the perfect landscape to photograph him in.

Get cracking... it's National Egg Day!
In the realm of Dark Oak Forest, egg harvesting can be a dangerous proposition. The Oakenfield brothers are on a mission to harvest some fresh eggs from a pair of thrashers. Unfortunately, stealth mode is not their specialty. Little Birch quietly sneezes while big brother Aspen gives a very loud, "God bless you!". That's all it took for the thrasher's sharp ears. In a wingbeat they were on the brothers like flies on roadkill. Forrest, always a quick thinker, distracts the birds by sacrificing one of their pilfered orbs. While the thrashers protect their precious egg, the brothers quickly escape into the woods and safety.

The acorns are a little late on their morning post and with good reason. They are taking a much needed cat nap! After a late night of work, Rip van Wrinkle didn't have the strength to make it to bed, so he joined his friend Fluffy for a little snooze. Fluffy's paws make surprisingly soft pillows. This incredibly cozy sleeping nook, complete with a built-in white noise machine set to purring mode, caused Rip to sleep deep into the morning.
