Brandon Simmons

Brandon Simmons The one-legged Content creator and a Disabled Self-Advocate with the motto: If you give up, your dreams won't come true!

Brandon Simmons is a determined advocate who has transformed his challenges into a platform for change. As a one-legged above-the-knee amputee with a speech impairment and a deformed right hand, he has encountered significant obstacles throughout his life. With the unwavering support of his parents, Michael and Teresa, Brandon learned the values of perseverance and self-acceptance. His journey tow

ard confidence began at the Recreation Outreach Center (R.O.C.) Youth Center, where he evolved from a shy individual into an outgoing advocate over the course of ten years. Additionally, he volunteered for fourteen years at Watertown TV, taking on roles in camerawork, editing, directing, and audio directing. In 2020, he achieved his dream role there, but faced a setback in 2023 when he was let go. Despite this, he remains committed to his media production projects. Through his social media channels, Brandon shares his story and advocates for inclusivity, emphasizing that disabilities do not define an individual’s potential. He inspires many by demonstrating that with courage and resilience, it is possible to overcome adversity and create a more inclusive future for everyone.

This video breaks down the difference between The Arc and the ADRC and how each one supports disabled people in Wisconsin. It explains what they do, who they help, and how they can support people with services, information, and advocacy. Anyone who has a disability, or supports someone who does, can use this simple, clear guide to know where to turn for help.

Today was a big advocacy step. I had a Zoom meeting with staff from The Arc about disability self‑advocacy and support in Jefferson County. We talked about starting with baby steps and working with disabled people, not just for us.

I also shared about my Facebook group, Jefferson County Disability Self‑Advocacy, and my YouTube channel; 1LegLife.

I’ve been working on a lot of disability-related videos and already have quite a few topics covered, but there are still so many more out there. You’d honestly be surprised how many important things in the disabled community don’t get talked about enough. What topics should I cover next? Drop your ideas below.

it's my 33rd birthday. I don't feel any older. To me it's just another day. For the last few years I don't ask for much for my birthday but mainly to see my fiancee.

As a disabled self-advocate, I’m tired of hearing, “You’re an inspiration” or “I’m sorry.” Disabled people are not here for pity, being treated “special” or inspirational moments. We want respect, equality, and to be treated like people.
