Brandon Simmons

Brandon Simmons The one-legged Content creator and a Disabled Self-Advocate with the motto: If you give up, your dreams won't come true!

Brandon Simmons is a determined advocate who has transformed his challenges into a platform for change. As a one-legged above-the-knee amputee with a speech impairment and a deformed right hand, he has encountered significant obstacles throughout his life. With the unwavering support of his parents, Michael and Teresa, Brandon learned the values of perseverance and self-acceptance. His journey tow

ard confidence began at the Recreation Outreach Center (R.O.C.) Youth Center, where he evolved from a shy individual into an outgoing advocate over the course of ten years. Additionally, he volunteered for fourteen years at Watertown TV, taking on roles in camerawork, editing, directing, and audio directing. In 2020, he achieved his dream role there, but faced a setback in 2023 when he was let go. Despite this, he remains committed to his media production projects. Through his social media channels, Brandon shares his story and advocates for inclusivity, emphasizing that disabilities do not define an individual’s potential. He inspires many by demonstrating that with courage and resilience, it is possible to overcome adversity and create a more inclusive future for everyone.

As a disabled self-advocate, I’m tired of hearing, “You’re an inspiration” or “I’m sorry.” Disabled people are not here for pity, being treated “special” or inspirational moments. We want respect, equality, and to be treated like people.
