People are usually surprised by how little of our engagement session is actually about photos.

Yes, we'll walk somewhere nice and take some pictures. But most of the time is spent talking. I ask about how you met, what you're nervous about for the wedding day, what you want people to feel when they look at your photos years from now. You ask me questions too, about how I work, what to expect, anything that's been on your mind.

By the time we're done, you're not standing in front of a stranger with a camera anymore. You're standing in front of someone you've actually talked to.

That's the whole point. Your wedding day goes smoother when the person photographing it isn't a question mark.

If you've never had an engagement session before, this is basically what it's for. Plus you get photos from this period of your life to hold on to.

Madison and David got married with just their immediate family in a row house in Capitol Hill.

No bridal party, no four-hour reception timeline, no list of must-have shots handed to me in advance.

What that actually changed: I had time. Time to follow a real conversation instead of cutting it short for the next posed shot. Time to catch the moment David's mother started crying mid-toast, instead of being three steps away setting up the next group photo.

Fewer guests doesn't mean less to capture. It usually means more room to capture what's actually happening.

You don't have to know how to pose for your wedding photos to come out beautifully. In fact, I'd rather you didn't.

Posed photography asks you to stop living your day so we can capture a version of it. Documentary photography lets you keep living it, and captures what actually happens. The laugh that catches you off guard. The way your dad looks at you right before he walks you down the aisle. The moment your partner forgets anyone else is in the room.

I'm not there to direct your wedding. I'm there to notice it.

That's the whole difference between a posed photo and a documentary one, and it's why my approach works for couples who want their day to feel like theirs, not like a photoshoot they had to get through.

The couples with the best photos aren’t the ones who nailed every pose. They’re the ones who forgot I was there. There’s a difference between a wedding that looks good and a wedding that felt good. I’m only interested in one of those.

Most people photograph the wedding. I photograph the parts in between.

The glance across the room before anyone calls for attention. The hand that reaches out right before the ceremony starts. The inside joke that lands mid-toast and makes one person laugh harder than everyone else.

These aren't the moments anyone plans. They're not on a shot list. They happen in the margins of the day, and they're gone in about two seconds.

That's exactly why I watch for them.

A good documentary photographer doesn't just cover the events. They notice what's happening around the events. That's where most of the truth lives.

Can I tell you what I'm actually thinking on our first call?

I'm not trying to close a sale. I'm not running through a checklist. I'm mostly just trying to figure out if I'm the right person for your day, the same way you're trying to figure that out about me.

I want to know what you're most excited about. What you're nervous about. Whether the way I work actually fits what you need, or whether someone else would serve you better. I'd rather tell you that on a call than have you book me and realize it six months later.

So if you've been putting off reaching out because you're not sure what to say or whether you're ready, that's okay. There's no wrong way to show up to this conversation.

I just want to hear about your day.

Nobody has ever looked natural after being told to look natural.

So I stopped giving directions.

For portraits, I just let you be. I know that sounds a little scary when you don't know what to do in front of a camera. But that's kind of the point. Why do we feel like we have to "do" something?

What if you just did you, whatever that looks like?

Stand how you actually stand. Laugh at the thing that's actually funny. Hold each other the way you do when nobody's watching.

The photos in this carousel came from exactly that. No posing. No "okay, look at each other." Just two people being themselves while I stayed out of the way.

Nobody hangs a technically perfect photo on their wall because it was well-lit.

They hang it because it makes them feel something when they walk past it. Because it catches something that actually happened, not something they were arranged to look like.

I think about this every time I'm at a wedding. Not "is this a good photo?" but "is this the kind of photo they'll still care about in ten years?" Those two questions have very different answers.

The ones that last are almost never the posed ones. They're the moment right after the vows when nobody remembered to signal me. The way someone's face looked when they weren't trying to look any particular way.

Save this if you're still figuring out what to look for in a photographer: ask to see a gallery, not a highlight reel. The photos that make you feel something on someone else's wedding day are the ones that'll do the same on yours.

It was kinda of the perfect spring day, sunny but not hot, a little breeze in everyone’s hair and a lovely evening.

We started in the library of the National Cathedral School.

We made some fun portraits.

The ceremony was held in the courtyard.

The colors they picked were just beautiful.

It was fun to use my film camera to capture some very special moments.

The Bridemaids loved their umbrellas.

And I made sure to use it.

The feeling right after you got married made for the best candid portraits.

The sun showed up enough to play with me.

Could not capture them and the cathedral, this is timeless!

They arrived at their cocktail hour while their guests were playing with the lawn games.

Couldn’t resist to capture Christine with my film camera loaded with a B&W roll.

The speeches moments are always a good time to look for different angles.

The first dance is the whole vibe!

But the dancefloor is the best part.
