Today I visited the National Museum of African American History in honor of Juneteenth. As a relatively new resident of the DMV, I’m so excited to explore all of the museums in the area and it seems fitting I start with this one.

I don’t have much experience with Juneteenth as it wasn’t a holiday my family celebrated growing up. Regardless, there is a thriving and vibrant (and diverse!) culture within the African American community that is worth celebrating and acknowledging. And the museum has done a wonderful job curating and encapsulating this.

And of course, I had to stop down at the concession stand for some authentic and mouthwateringly delicious soul food. Definitely an amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone!

So why did I quit posting on here for a year? In short, I was burnout and confused.

I had been posting just to post on this account for months prior to my absence. I had completely exhausted my photo archives and I wasn’t out shooting any new content. This left me feeling incredibly uninspired and stagnant.

Throw in the pandemic, which prevented me from traveling the way I wanted to, and I was just over it. I hadn’t expected to be gone for over a year.. but I knew I needed a break.

Now that I’m in a brand new city (one of the most vibrant and bustling in the country), I feel that urge to create again. And there’s still no better platform to itch that creative impulse than Instagram, in my opinion (sorry TikTok).

As I said previously, I’ll be changing the type of content I post on here, veering away from the landscape and beach shots this account has become known for. But we’ll get to that later. It’ll take a few weeks of engagement to respark this account with the algorithm anyways 😂

A lot has changed in my self-imposed Instagram sabbatical… first and foremost being I moved to DC!

I got an amazing job opportunity in March which prompted the relocation. I’ll be spending the next couple of years in this beautiful city and I’m so excited to explore all it has to offer. I’ll also be making frequent trips back to North Carolina as my parents are still there.

I’ll be making a post regarding my specific decision to stop posting on here and why that happened, but I’m thoroughly refreshed and ready to create again!

I’ll be taking this account in a semi-new direction, away from the strictly landscape photos I tended to post previously… but I’m getting ahead of myself here.

For now… here’s a casual shot of some monument in DC that seems to attract a lot of attention.

01-03-2022 👀

It’s been a long time since my last post, and I’m not quite back yet. But, I have a ton of exciting new content planned for this account after the new year. (And a brand new direction and theme too). In the meantime, enjoy this sunrise and hello to any of you who have stuck around in my prolonged absence!

Finally back after an extended break! I’ve noticed so many people talking about feeling burnt out from social media lately, whether it’s due to the constant change with the algorithms making it harder for our work to be seen, or the overall exhausting nature of spending hours a day on Instagram. I highly recommend taking scheduled breaks from social media, especially if it’s causing you stress. Someone once said that “absence makes the heart grow fonder.”

Back when I was in college, I used to spend so much time in the Boston Public Garden. The park, along with Boston Common, served many roles for me. It was a gym when I needed to exercise, a form of therapy when I needed a break from exam stress, and an entertainment venue when events would be held.

I personally love the convenience of city life. There’s always something to see and do, and you’re usually within arms reach of anything that you may need. But, it can also be chaotic at times. When the hustle and bustle of urban life gets to be overwhelming, city parks are the perfect place to escape for a reprieve.

They’re also a place to escape all of the concrete and connect with a bit of nature. From exotic ducks to snowy owls, the diverse wildlife in some of these parks is amazing. Sometimes you can get so lost in these places that you forget you’re in a pounding mecca surrounded by hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people.

Since the pandemic began, I’ve read how city dwellers are using this time for a chance to reconnect with these parks that are sometimes taken for granted. In New York, people are using Central Park as a venue to escape the parameters of their often small apartments. In Chicago, Lincoln Park saw an increase in foot traffic as well (when the weather was warm, that is). I’m glad these spaces are finally starting to get a bit of appreciation.

Do you have a favorite city park?

One of the things I miss most about engaging with the public (such a crazy thing to say 😂) are the local eateries.

Whether I’m in my hometown or on the road, I always make it a point to visit local restaurants, coffee shops, and bars to get a proper sense of the area.

When you’re at home, there’s nothing quite like achieving the “regular” status at a family owned establishment. The staff knows you on a first name basis, and they know what you’re going to order before even handing you a menu. These are the places you don’t mind stopping by alone to grab a bite to eat or a drink because you feel so at home.

On the flip side, when you’re traveling, these places become the best spots to immerse yourself in the local culture. Imagine going to a thriving city like Paris or New York as a tourist and only going to Starbucks and chain bars and restaurants... you’d be missing out on the entire experience.

Not only are these small businesses grateful for your patronage, they’re also usually more than eager to give you tips and suggestions for sights to see (and places to avoid) during your stay. And when you’re in unfamiliar territory, insider knowledge is as valuable as gold!

What’s your favorite family owned restaurant, bar, or coffee shop? Looking for some recommendations ahead of what will hopefully be a more travel filled year!

A bit of housekeeping...

Over the last year and a half, I’ve been working on a rebrand for this page. In fact, had it not been for the pandemic, this account would already look a bit different.

My favorite travel publication is (though, I also enjoy their competitors content, ). Their magazine is visually appealing and they provide a ton of value.

When I originally created my blog site, I wanted my content to draw inspiration from those publications. I had planned an extensive tour of the US to get tons of content to work with before moving on to international trips which were slated for this year.

Then, of course, the pandemic happened. Which threw everything out of whack and has left me in a weird limbo twiddling my thumbs.

Things are starting to look hopeful, though. Perhaps we could start seeing a return to some type of normalcy relatively soon. While things are still too uncertain to make any substantial plans, I think in the coming weeks I’ll be able to start executing some of my original ideas.

Obviously, my name isn’t included in this accounts username, “FrostyBlueWave”. I’ve kept it that way because this was never meant to be a personal page, but a resource for others.

So, starting around April, this account will become less personal and more resourceful, centered on the travel industry, and tourism. I’ll be using my other account, , as my personal photography page starting in the spring!

Cheers guys!
