There’s a new dozen statues around Freedom Plaza now, part of a $10.5M “temporary beautification project” paid for with National Park entry fees. It’s not staying — the whole installation comes down in September. The centerpiece, “Spirit of Liberty,” is 23 feet of bronze — freedom, self-government, civic responsibility, cast in permanent-looking metal. Except she’s filed as temporary too. The DC Council sent a letter to the governors of Michigan and the U.S. Virgin Islands, requesting the immediate withdrawal of their National Guard troops. At 6pm EDT on July 8, 2026, all 50 states and 16 territories will read it again — together, at the same moment, spanning roughly 9,500 miles from the Caribbean to the Pacific.

State capitols. City halls. Libraries. Kitchen tables.

Same words. Still unfinished business.

Every generation inherits the American experiment. Every generation has a choice: to leave it weaker or stronger than they found it.

This Fourth of July, I’m celebrating the freedoms we’ve fought for, the progress we’ve made, and the responsibility we all share to keep moving this country forward.

Freedom isn’t finished. Neither is America.

Happy Fourth of July. 🇺🇸
