Alyona Vogelmann Portraits

Alyona Vogelmann Portraits Timeless portraits with a fashion flair I’m Alyona Vogelmann and I’m a portrait photographer. I think that everyone can be seen as a work of art….

And it’s not making people something they aren’t but rather revealing their essence and a beauty inside…

We as women can be very hard on ourselves: we are not tall enough, we are not skinny enough… I hear from the most beautiful women: “Oh, I’m not photogenic, I don’t look good on pictures…” It’s understandable as our society in a way dictates what beauty is. But what I see is that women could be

beautiful regardless of shape or age… It’s not about anybody’s idealism, it’s how we feel about ourselves. I feel that it’s my job as a portrait photographer to make you feel beautiful and to give you something meaningful and timeless: the best pictures of yourself. Everybody is unique and I have to understand what the most harmonious look for you. Sometimes it relates to certain era in fashion, sometimes it’s just a style. It could be something totally unexpected! I call it seeing a jewel in a woman. I believe that everyone has it inside, you just have to dig it out and let it shine. My academic background in fine arts and fashion design, along with a degree in photography really helps me in this process. It’s like creating a piece of fine art where the center of the piece is a woman herself. I love that moment when a woman comes to my studio to see the pictures of herself revealed for the first time… I see her face lighting up and at this moment I feel that I’ve given her a tangible validation of her beauty... It’s’ all about making the difference, right? So at this particular moment I feel that these pictures make a difference. I feel that they help women reconnect with themselves, help them see how beautiful they really are. It’s an extremely gratifying and powerful experience. Ultimately, this is why I do photography.

Roman.

With the World Cup opening today, this felt like the perfect time to share these images.

Roman played soccer at Skidmore, and when we planned these portraits, he shared something that stuck with me: soccer photos are often all intensity and seriousness. Very "macho". He wanted to show something else too, the joy of the game.

So we created portraits that felt more like him: confident and approachable.

Takaaki of Lakaff.

Photographing musicians is always special because their work is so deeply personal. Every artist has a sound, a story that makes them recognizable.

That is exactly why musicians need more than a standard headshot. They need photographs that reflect who they are as artists. Before someone hears their music, they often encounter an image first. An image that can communicate artistic identity in an instant.

From The Divine Magazine:
For Lakaff, music isn’t merely a craft – it is also ritual. His recording process mimics ceremony: building textures, calling in rhythm, creating space for the music to breathe. You can hear that intentionality in the smallest details. Each melodic shift is like part of a larger emotional arc. And there is a generosity in the way he composes music and offers the listener a way in.”

He jokingly calls his sound “heart music”. It's quirky, playful and groovy because, as he puts it, “soul music” was already taken.

Creatives and musicians: what story do your current portraits tell about your work?

Nicholas Graduation Portraits.

Do you have a recent graduate spending a few weeks at home before leaving for the next chapter? Or maybe visiting during summer break? Or graduating from college and you want to commemorate this moment while everyone is still under the same roof?

This is the chance to make something tangible and meaningful.

I’m sharing a few pictures of Nicholas, who graduated from the University of Maryland ( and one behind the scenes with his mom helping out!) We spent a few hours on the alma mater grounds, and his dad even let us use the dream car for a few shots. A Ferrari will do that to a session.

And we finished it off with a beautiful custom album the family gets to keep.

If your family is in that small window where everyone is together, let’s make it happen.

Deirdre.

This photo session was almost a year in the making. Deirdre first saw one of my portraits as one of my client’s avatars on a work Zoom call. She said it was an instant reaction, almost a recognition that this was something she wanted for herself.

That image stayed with her long enough that she eventually found her way to my studio.

As part of a personal branding project, we created a series of portraits for her work and also for personal use, but this one I feel captures something very unique. It’s one of the favorites for both of us.

By the way, this portrait is a welcome addition to my 60+ and Beautiful gallery, can you believe it?

Thank you, Anna for being the protagonist!

Christyna.

Some portrait sessions just fall into place from the very beginning. Working with Christyna felt that way: easy, collaborative, seamless.

She’s an Exhibit Developer and Project Manager at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and came to me looking for personal branding portraits that felt more human than standard headshots. Professional, yes, but also warm, stylish with an edge, approachable, and reflective of who she is beyond her title.

Christyna brings such positive energy into a room. She’s thoughtful, incredibly organized: a dream to work with!

Together, we created a series of images that feel relaxed and personal while still polished. Photographs that reveal some of her inner world, her warmth and curiosity.

Seeing some of them in print made me especially happy, and I’m excited to share them with her.

It also made me think about how many of us are still using photographs that no longer feel like us or perhaps never did. When you look through your own images, do they reflect who you are today?

Galina & Irina.

This post is dedicated to the upcomig Mother’s Day. Mother-daughter sessions are some of the most touching and meaningful work I get to do. They become much more than just photoshoots: they are little celebrations, bonding, and just simply spending time together. The time that so easily gets lost in busy everyday life.
When was the last time you did that?

The heart of this session was Irina’s mother, Galina. We had been waiting for the right moment to make it happen, and finally everything came together.
What mattered most to me was capturing the sense of joy and warmth between them.

We also dedicated a very special time for creating timeless portraits of Galina, Irina’s mom. Portraits with intention and elegance, and full attention to who she is at this stage of her life.

Her are some of the portraits that we took on that day.

Julia.
Sinner or the Saint?

These images were taken a few moments apart, and these looks were completely spontaneous.

Same woman. Same session. Same outfit.
In one, she’s looking inward, a bit detouched, gazing somewhere only she can reach.
In the other, her hair is wild, she’s looking straight at you with a knowing smile.

When we sat down for her reveal and put these two side by side, we both went quiet for a moment.
“That’s it,” she said. “That’s exactly where I am right now.”

We think about the Saint and the Sinner like they’re moral opposites, like we have to choose. But what if they’re not moral categories at all, perhaps two frequencies a woman moves between? The one who tends, reflects, takes care of others. And the one who plays, seduces, burns bright.

Julia didn’t come to the studio just to take nice photos. She came to meet herself.
This is what happens when a session becomes a little bit of therapy. When you give yourself permission to play without judgment, something real shows up. Something you maybe didn’t even know you needed to see. That’s when I remember why I do this work.

Julia, thank you for trusting the process and for letting me share these! ❤️🤍

When was the last time you really played?
Not performed or posed. Played. Tried on a version of yourself just to see how you felt?

Do you print your photos?

Yesterday I visited my dear friend Lisa who became one of my very first portrait clients. Before we sat down for tea, she walked me through her home, and there they were, photographs on the walls like chapters of a book: a cherry tree framing the Washington Monument (that tree is long gone now), Roman holiday-inspired portrait of Lisa and Alan on a Vespa, three generations of women: Lisa’s mom, herself, and her daughter Olivia , Olivias sweet sixteen session, a Father's Day portrait of her husband Alan…and many more.

I stood there taking it all in, and tried to understand what I feel at the moment. Not pride exactly....more like meaning. Touched deeply. This is a big part of why I do what I do.

Photos on a screen are lovely. But a photo on a wall becomes part of a home's story. It holds its ground through the years while everything else shifts around it.

I found myself hoping that one day I'll visit Olivia's home and find those same images alongside new ones. Her own chapter layered on top of theirs.

Do you have photos hanging in your home that stop you for a moment when you pass them? The ones that make you feel something you can't quite name?

It might be time to let them out.❤️

Cristina.

I tried to count how many looks we created for Cristina. Eleven. This dress was almost an afterthought, an optional choice. But in the moment, it was the only one that made sense.

Who is this beauty? A noblewoman from another century? The heroine of a fantasy novel filled with knights, dragons, and ancient kingdoms?

Perhaps it doesn't matter. Art, history, and cultural memory all weave together to create an image. I feel the right image has a way of finding us. We just have to tune in and listen.❤️

Negar and Jonnon.
Mother and daughter.

Sometimes it’s not the posed portraits that reveal the connection between a mother and her child, but the sweet little moments in-between.

My role is simply to be present and prepared. Open to whatever unfolds.

Negar shared that the name “Jonnon” means “someone you love like your own soul” in Farsi. And it fits her perfectly. She’s full of life: singing, dancing, asking bold little questions that turned our time together into a playful exchange.

I feel like these images really showed her personality and their own unique mother-daughter dynamic.

With Mother’s Day around the corner, I’ve been thinking about how quickly these moments pass, and how meaningful it is to hold onto them in a form of a portrait.
