The ride concluded with the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, a 185 mile segment along the Potomac River. It brought us into Washington DC, finishing the epic journey that started all the way from Seattle!

My last photo as we departed Pittsburgh. The City of Bridges is an incredible testament to urban architecture, and it’s a shame I didn’t take more shots that captured this city’s beauty by the rivers.

For obvious reasons, any sign of renewable energy was a sign of optimism and joy for the Climate Ride. Eastern Washington and here in the Midwest (perhaps rural Illinois?) had the most wind farms on the route.

A ride across America wouldn’t be complete without crossing the Mississippi River. More beautiful bridges for me to admire as we biked through gorgeous parks through small towns, such as here in Davenport.

As scattered and widespread as we are in a huge country like America, there are real gems of parks and public infrastructure.

Bridges became a favorite part of the cross country bike ride, and this amazing half mile bridge over the Des Moines River might just top the list. Beyond the interesting architecture and incredible length, it lights up at night! Unfortunately we rode through just a bit too early to get a glimpse of the spectacle.

Any signs of bike friendliness (like giant bike art) was a good sign for weary bike packers in the Midwest. Little did we know that Iowa actually hosts a state-wide party bike tour called Ragbrai!

is an “epic seven-day rolling festival of bicycles, music, food, camaraderie, and community. It is the oldest, largest, and longest multi-day bicycle touring event in the world.”

I think I know my next adventure 😉

As we crossed into different time zones our 5 AM wake up meant arising in the dark more and more. This meant we got to watch the sunrise every morning. The sun rising over bales of hay in field next to a city park may not seem glamorous when you read it, but it was the first morning show of nature we could truly appreciate, looking out onto a wide sky with colors greeting us for breakfast.

The Midwest storms really sneak up on ya. In such a vast space you suddenly feel so exposed and vulnerable to whatever nature decides to throw at you. You learn how powerful the weather is when it’s just you and the bike.

Out in the rural Midwest the endless amount of train and tracks, sometimes as far as the eye could see, really revealed the stunning extent, mile by mile, the U.S. invested in infrastructure. But with that comes lots of complicated thoughts: stories of the cost for those who built them, questions about the lack of its modernization, and even awe for a glimpse into the details of how the industrialized world operates.

It was scary how unafraid the bulls in Yellowstone were! The morning we left the national park many of us were woken up this guy weaving through our tents, looking for leftovers.

At a small KOA in Buffalo, Wyoming, after 50 miles of climbing, we were met by a beautiful sunset glistening over the river adjacent to our campsite. I was struck over and over on this trip how beautiful nature is in even the smallest nooks of Earth.
