Five years ago today, Peter B. Kaplan died. Time evaporates as we age and 5 years seems like a blink of the eye. As I go through Peter's images, I see him talking, climbing, laughing, screaming, instructing and cajoling everyone in proximity. Peter was all in when he took pictures; present, in the moment and loving it.
I think I can objectively say the color, composition and vibrancy of his work is unmistakable and distinctive. Look at 1000 images of the Statue of Liberty, New York City bridges and buildings and you can instantly pick out Peter’s. To that end, myself and my children created this website. It’s not finished, and it may stay a work in progress, but it’s a beginning. An online store and additional images are forthcoming. So, to honor the 5th year anniversary of Peter's passing, we share with you the new website, peterbkaplanphotography.com I welcome feedback and comments, or a simple thumbs up or down. Peter B. Kaplan in one of his favorite places and building: the Empire State antenna's red lights. The workers who changed the lights bulbs - his absolute heros.

Thanksgiving Day Parade, mid 1980s.
Superman, always the crowd pleaser, was towards the end - right before Santa.
I wish I new exactly where Peter was when this was taken.

Don't know what building he's on. Any New York City historians care to guess?

Peter photographed the renovation of the Statue of Liberty for years with unprecedented access. Another great image taken as the scaffolding went up. One might notice this individual has nothing tethering him to the scaffold. I always wondered what he was looking for. ( If he lost a contact lens, he's in trouble...)

Peter photographed the renovation of the Statue of Liberty for years with unprecedented access from the Statue of Liberty - Ellis Island Foundation. This point in time as the scaffolding was erected allowed for many remarkable images. Many lucky folks working on the renovation got to pose right here, as Peter did. This was taken by Laura Mueller, Peter's assistant at the time. We used this at his memorial. Laura got one as well.

Peter photographed the renovation of the Statue of Liberty for years. At the conclusion of the project, and very close to his heart, Peter assembled a portfolio of ten 16' x 20" dye transfer prints revealing intimate details of the Lady in the Harbor. He called it "Liberty Pieces." This one was taken as the scaffolding was erected allowing Peter to stand directly in the front of her face. It's been said Peter photographed the statue with human qualities. This closeup is a good example.
