For nearly 20 years or so, I have been part of summer camps for children, teenagers, and families who deal with a rare genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis (NF). NF affects the nervous system, along with a host of other complications, NF causes tumors to grow on nerve endings. Affecting 1 in every 3,000 people.
Last year I returned to a camp that I first attended as a camper 20 years ago. I got up early on the first day before the campers arrived and stood on the small fishing pier by the lake. While the camp has been hosted at many different sites, one constant has always remained. The camps ability to change a life. Many of the friends I have made at the camp still remain to this day. My out look on life has also changed. I go back every summer to be an example and role model for the campers of not allowing NF to get in our way or stop us from achieving the life we want.
