Growing up, it was natural to always have a camera pointing in your face at family functions. Every time my dad’s side of the family got together for dinner, my Grampie would shout “whisky” and take our photos, all of us smiling with a plate of food in front of us. During those moments I was so confused why each dinner or gathering was so important to memorialize but now I get it, he wasn’t taking a picture of the meal or the seating arrangements, he was trying to capture the essence of the moment, the happiness he felt every time all of this family was gathered together, just being present.

As we got older, I can’t tell you the number of photos I’ve spent looking at with my cousins, trying to pick out my aunts and uncles as children, or just reminiscing on times together. And, how thankful I was that the walls were painted with so many memories, each teleporting you back to a specific time in the past, inimitable.

Now, I know it sounds crazy, but I know Mateo has a good amount of Sanson genes in there because the entire time he was following my lens around the room, like he knew instinctively where it was, like a true Sanson. I’ve never seen that in a newborn session before.
