Wagner Saddle Club Labor Day Rodeo Photo Update!

Sorry for the delay in sharing photos from the Wagner Saddle Club’s Labor Day Rodeo! We attended Saturday evening, and while I have plenty of photos waiting to be sorted through, I haven’t had a chance to get to them just yet.

I’m currently attending a Night Landscape Photography Workshop in the Badlands this week, so my rodeo photos are having to wait their turn.

On my way home from an appointment today, I decided to take a much needed break and discover some new backroads I hadn’t been on yet. Thankfully, I remembered to grab the camera before leaving the house this morning because I stumbled upon some geese with their goslings (they were all very camera shy!) and even spotted a few wood ducks along the way.

This image stays with me. I don’t create many black and white photographs, but from the moment I saw this scene in the Badlands, I knew it was meant to be. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks working on it, trying to shape it into what that morning meant to me. It rained a lot during this workshop, but when the rain passed, something incredible happened. The clouds began to shift, and the light broke through in the most powerful way. The wet earth darkened the landscape, and the contrast between the shadows and the highlights made the scene feel almost majestic — quiet, dramatic, and deeply moving all at once. The rain we hadn’t wanted became the gift. It transformed the land and reminded me that sometimes the most beautiful moments come from the unexpected. This morning — and this image — are ones I won’t forget. Thank you, Rammy and Erik, for such an incredible workshop. I learned so much from both of you, and the opportunities you gave us to experience and photograph these breathtaking moments meant more than I can say.

"Badlands in Bloom"

Still thinking about this moment from a recent workshop in the Badlands—wildflowers in the foreground, a beautiful rock formation ahead, and sticky clay everywhere. Despite the mess, we got our shots! But what I’ll remember most are the new friends and the time we shared capturing this amazing place.
