The end of roadrailer service is nigh as a Dash 9 leads 256 east through Wabash, Indiana. August 24-25 will mark the final runs of these dedicated roadrailer trains. The service has become too obsolete and the trailers have become too old to justify continuing the service.

A pair of increasingly rare Dash 9 locomotives power NS train 120 eastbound through Wabash, Indiana. Since the very beginning of the AC44C6M program in 2015, over 800 Dash 9 locomotives, including the standard cab D9-40C “Tophat” units, have been rebuilt with AC traction, new cabs, new electronics, and more. Only just under 250 Dash 9s remain in active service on NS as of posting. We are witnessing the end of an era on Norfolk Southern.

NS 259 heading west through the Bond Street crossing with a three-pack of GEVOs for power. The train had a very friendly crew, with the conductor waving and the engineer giving me a friendly hand gesture from the cab. I also got a horn salute from the engineer!

NS local L46 out of Marion, Indiana, crossing the Wabash River this afternoon (May 10, 2024). This turn train will run as far north as Milford and typically uses six-axle road power, like this ES44AC “GEVO”.

Roadrailer at Golden Hour

Thing is, this wasn't supposed to happen. NS 255, this westbound roadrailer train running from Detroit to Kansas City, is usually an early morning run on the Huntington District. However, it was running several hours late and ended up being an evening run.

The next step in my life is coming. I will be getting my first Indiana Real ID shipped to me in the coming business days.

After a very busy day, I decided to snag NS 148 with a DC GEVO leading the way.

I'm back! Yes, this is Thomas Boyer, and I have revived my old train photography page under a newer name, “Boyer Rail Photography”. I plan to post more photos from trackside in the near future.

For now, here is a shot of mine from Wabash, Indiana, last Sunday. Norfolk Southern intermodal train 259 is seen rolling west through town with a very friendly conductor who waved back to me from the cab of his AC44C6M leader.
