The Little Tanasi River joins the Telliquo River here just north over the smoky mountain range from the birthplace of all Cherokee nations. It was the empire of the agricultural Mississippian people long before it was a major capital of the Cherokee nation, the birthplace of Seqouyah (inventor of the Cherokee alphabet), namesake of the state of “Tennessee”. French fur trader immigrants learned/swapped weapons/crops with the Cherokee here. The British immigrants built a fort here when they wanted to hedge back the French from colonization (the French and Indian war should be named French/British War), and failed to keep a relationship with the Cherokee for longer than 4 years. Then came the US Colonists pioneering westward, leading most down the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma.
