Today marks the last day of mental health awareness month, emphasis on awareness. Popular portrayals of the mentally ill support their legitimized stigmatization, which contributes the dual effect of causing those suffering from mental illness to internalize shame towards their illness and convincing people within society to fear mental illness. For my final series in my undergraduate studies I did a series on su***de and depression. With my final series at UNF, Darkest Diminution, I chose to address the emotional aspect of issues that are personal to me but are also significant to culture as a whole. I address the stigmas that surround mental illness, most specifically depression and su***de, in an attempt to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by those with this disorder and to create a greater cultural understanding as well as address my own issues. While the project is closely related to my own experiences , I did not approach it with a sense of victimization, but as an artist seeking to create fabrications that serve as visual metaphors for complex issues that affect many people. In addition, my goal with this work was to evoke constructive conversation about a range of mental issues in a direct way that might enhance cultural understanding and help those afflicted seek help. Please share.
