Today would have been my Memaw’s 95th birthday.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I was growing up, there was always this photo hanging in her living room that some people would have considered a little “risqué” for the time she had it taken. This was the 50s. A woman posing confidently in a bikini, owning her body in a way that probably made a few people clutch their pearls.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But Memaw loved it. She displayed it proudly & my eye went to it every time I walked into her living room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Looking back, I realize she was quietly planting a seed in me long before I knew what bo***ir was or that it would become such a big part of my life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
She showed me that women could be bold, take up space, and celebrate themselves without apology.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now here I am years later, helping women reconnect with their confidence and learn to love themselves again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I miss her wisdom so much, and I’m grateful that image from her living room will always live rent free in my mind as part of the inspiration behind Black Dahlia Bo***ir.
