The Process

Each photograph is created in layers, combining contemporary digital printing with one of photography’s oldest and most enduring printing processes: platinum and palladium.

The process begins with the digital image. All black and gray tones are removed, leaving only the color information. This color layer is printed with archival pigment inks onto 100% cotton rag paper.

Next, the complete image is converted to black and white, inverted, and digitally printed onto a transparent film to create a digital negative.

The cotton rag paper is then hand-coated with a light-sensitive solution containing platinum and palladium salts and allowed to dry. The digital negative is carefully aligned over the printed color layer, and the print is exposed to ultraviolet light. It is then developed and rinsed by hand.

During development, the platinum and palladium form the black, gray, and tonal values of the image while the underlying archival pigment print provides the color. The result is a full-color photograph in which the tonal range is created with platinum and palladium, producing luminous highlights, exceptionally rich blacks, and remarkable depth.

Once the print has completely dried, a thin layer of natural beeswax is carefully massaged into the surface by hand. This final step deepens the richness of the colors, enhances the print’s luminous, painterly surface reminiscent of Dutch Master paintings, and protects the finished work.

By combining modern digital photography with a handcrafted nineteenth-century printing process, each photograph becomes a layered object that unites contemporary technology with traditional craftsmanship, resulting in prints of exceptional permanence, depth, and presence.
