Princeton New Jersey on the first warm day in late February was abuzz with people. I was there to see the newly reopened University Art Gallery, which is fabulous. Lots of people were out enjoying the surprise sun and warmth. I was there with my vintage Rolleiflex 3.5 making portraits.

Every year, West Orange (NJ) draws hundreds of marchers for its St. Patrick's Parade. Police officers from all the nearby towns, vintage cars, kids and bands from all over, including one from Castlerea, Ireland (they were going to 3 different parades this day). This was my second year photographing the action with my Rolleiflex 3.5. Extra fun was running into folks who I recognized & showing them their portraits from last year.

My photography show, LINE OF WORK, had its public reception on Friday at the Little Falls (NJ) Library. On the walls were 35 stylized portraits of local working people, ranging from plumbers to museum directors, from physical therapist to tattoo artists. Someone who visited wrote, "Every photo of each individual reflects such confidence and pride in what they do." Gallery visitors included the Mayor & Town Council, as well as three of my "muses" who pose with me in front of their portraits. L-R Attorney, Mail Carrier, photographer [moi!], Art Teacher

Here's a bit of history. In 1984, I had an assignment to photograph Jesse Jackson as he campaigned for the Presidency in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I had access to Jackson because my brother was the NH campaign director. I had to get Press credentials from the Secret Service, where I represented Black Star Picture Agency, who would then get 'first look' at the images.

I met Rev. Jackson in the local campaign headquarters in Portsmouth and photographed him in a very small upstairs office as he was interviewed by a reporter from In These Times magazine. Later, as the exhausted candidate motored to another campaign stop, Jackson fell asleep on my brother's shoulder. I love these photos for their drama and intensity. Photographed with Canon F1, various lenses, Dynalite strobes, on Fujichrome slide film.

I was also present at a critical part of the Hymietown scandal. See link.

I saw the hit Broadway musical "Ragtime" last Friday night at the Vivian Beaumont Theater at Lincoln Center, NYC. Based on the book be E.L. Doctorow (made into a movie in 1980 by Milos Forman) it is the story of class, discrimination, injustice & immigration. The play was wonderful; full of emotion & relevant today. The stagecraft is amazing. One of the three stars of the show is Brandon Uranowitz, who plays Tateh, a recent Jewish immigrant from Latvia. who rises from poverty to become a Hollywood movie mogul. I photographed Brandon during his senior year for his high school yearbook in Montclair, NJ.

The World's Scariest Santa Claus just in time for Christmas 2025! I photographed this frightening St. Nick on the boardwalk at the Asbury Park (NJ) Zombie Walk in the fall. I would not like to meet this fellow in a dark chimney. Photographed by Phil Cantor on a Rolleiflex 2.8D on expired Kodak 400NC film

My old fashioned Rolleiflex camera attracts attention. The best kind of attention. In Manhattan, in Central Park & Washington Square Park & in stores, people respond positively to posing for me.

It's autumn so the summer is a memory. Here's a memory of a warm evening in late August spent with friends in Rockland County, NY overlooking the Hudson River. I brought my ancient Rolleiflex camera to make portraits.

Labor Day on the coast of Maine was a beautiful weekend made even better by the wedding of my nephew. Since I was not the official photographer (though I have photographed 700 weddings) I could have some fun with my vintage Rolleiflex camera & B&W film and made some portraits of the party-goers.

Today, August 19, is WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY. In honor of WPD, I am sharing favorite portraits from my recent stay at what we New Jerseyans call THE SHORE. I spent the week at the town of Beach Haven on Long Beach Island. My seven friends were willing collaborators in the making of these photographs with my 70 year old Rolleiflex camera. I realize that my photos hardly show any sand & no ocean, but I assure you the beautiful beach was a block away. www.philcantor.com
