On Sunday, I did a 5.33 mile hike on the Lake Sonoma trail in Norvin Green State Forest in northern New Jersey. It had rained heavily the day before and the afternoon air was dense & humid. There were mushrooms of all types, textures & colors popping up on the moist & fetid forest floor. This example, possibly a blancaccio mushroom, caught a teaspoon of water in its indented cap.

I went to New York City last week to have lunch with my friend who loves to sport a pork pie hat & a take away double expresso. We were served by a lovely waitress at my favorite Thai restaurant. After lunch we walked to the Leica store on 13th Street where I chatted with a young guy with his hand-me-down Hasselblad (we should all be so lucky) and the store's security guard. The Tartan Day Parade (New York City|April 11, 2026) is a photographer's paradise, where Scottish-American heritage fills Sixth Avenue with color, tradition, and unforgettable characters. Every few steps there's another portrait waiting to happen.
I knew it would be colorful, so I loaded my 70 year old Rolleiflex 2.8 with expired Kodak NC400 film. Because it expired 18 years ago I had to rate the film at ISO 100 (which was not enough, BTW).

Some types of subjects choose the camera. Photographing 18th Century reenactors with a modern digital camera feels too easy. A 70-year-old Rolleiflex, on the other hand, seems like the perfect way to honor the craftsmanship and authenticity they bring to the Jockey Hollow spring encampment. (Morristown, NJ|April 18, 2026). Photographed on Kodak NC400 film, expired 2009; rated at ISO 80.

The smell of campfires, the sound of fifes and drums, hand-sewn clothing, and faces that could have belonged to another century. The American Revolutionary War renactors at the Battle of Monmouth (Freehold, NJ, June 21, 2026) made history feel remarkably close. My vintage Rolleiflex 3.5 & black & white film helped complete the illusion.

Don't call them reenactors. They call themselves Living Historians. At the 248th Anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth (Freehold, NJ • June 21, 2026), they don't just wear the past... they live it. They eat, sleep, dress, and work as 18th-century Americans. It only seemed right to photograph them with a camera from another era: my 70-year-old Rolleiflex 3.5.

Potter & ceramic artist Dan Weaver moved to Gouldsboro, Maine from Texas and has been making art from clay for 55 years. I stumbled upon his Maine Kiln Works serendipitously on the way back from taking pictures at Maine's rugged Schoodic Point.

I'm glad I stopped by because he's about to move to Quebec & create an educational maker's space & artisan lab. Photographed with a 70 year old Rolleiflex 3.5 on Kodak NC400 (film expired 2009, rated at ISO 160 pushed one stop) https://buff.ly/FXiGkss
